Dimitri’s on the Water – Great Greek in Tarpon Springs

So we first tried Dimitri’s on the Water in Tarpon Springs last November when we were there for Thanksgiving. This time however, we were staying off site as we’d been invited to a reception for the Tampa Boat Show. With all due respect, we didn’t want to stay in The Big Guava – and Tarpon Springs is a short jaunt away.

We defaulted and stayed at The Vista Inn Lake Tarpon. Technically, it is in Palm Harbor. But the eastern exposure gives you the opportunity to see the sunrise in the morning. Then at night, you can go to Sunset Beach in Tarpon Springs and watch the sunset.

We sat on the balcony, sipping coffee and watching the sun come up. A perfect start to our morning.

This view alone shows why The Vista made one of our Top 5 Romantic Spots in Florida.

Dimitri’s

Make no mistake, when you want Greek food in Tarpon Springs, the choices are endless. We have eaten at many of them. In fact, the night before our Dimitri’s experience, we dropped by Hella’s for a late night dessert. It was wonderful and the ambiance in both the restaurant and the bakery is great.

Hella’s was open until 10pm, so we sneaked a dessert.

But there’s something about sitting by the water that makes dining that much nicer. Dimitri’s on the Water is poised on the north side of Tarpon Springs’ signature Dodecanese Boulevard. It runs along the Sponge Docks and sits on the edge of the Anclote River.

So as we lunched, we had an opportunity see a boat show of our own.

We could see both ways up and down the Anclote River.

Dimitri’s food is good in and of itself. I had my standard spanakoptia while Mrs. Funmeister had a Greek salad and some braised, seasonal vegetables. It was all quite delicious and our waiter Eddie took good care of us.

A great lunch in a wonderful location.

For this dinner, the weather could not have been better. And it seemed that each time we looked up a boat was coming from one direction or the other.

Even the Sponge-O-Rama’s dolphin cruise slowed down so we could waive at each other.

And of course, what is a Greek dinner without saganaki? That’s a wedge of sheep cheese, covered with a shot of brandy and set ablaze. As the flames leap into the air, patrons are urged to shout “OPA!” Why? We still don’t know. It seems to be a Greek universal exclamation.

Our server seemed quite skilled. She lost no eyebrows or eyelashes and did not flinch when we hollered “OPA!”

In Conclusion

This was a great way to visit a few of the places we have come to know and love in Tarpon Springs. The Vista Inn is our choice for lodging, Hellas and Dimitris are great food choices – and the Sponge Docks is a great place for shopping and people watching.

The next time, we have vowed to go to Sponge-O-Rama and see the authentic movie they show. We also may take one of the dolphin watching cruises we see leaving the docks periodically. But as we have said in the past. Tarpon Springs needs no special event to invite a visit.

You Know Citrus Season is Here When the Oranges Arrive At Maxwell Groves

Like the title says – you know citrus season is here when the oranges arrive at Maxwell Groves.

In the sleepy little hamlet of Avon Park sits a small packing house known as Maxwell Groves. It is one of the hidden gems of Central Florida and one of the last vestiges of the old-time citrus industry.

The building sits back off Circle Street in now what is the “outskirts” of the City of Charm. Walking inside is a throwback to the real “Old Florida” of the 20th Century.

The wood chip-covered parking lot stretches out in front of the quaint clapboard building which is “Maxwell’s House of Fruit.”

People come from miles around to get the fresh sweet oranges and grapefruit. The selection is never quite the same. That’s because different varieties of citrus come in at different times of the season. It also means there are different blends of orange and grapefruit juice available as the season progresses.

Don’t worry – you can get a sample before you buy.

Maxwell’s keeps a dispenser full of the latest juice blend. But please, one to a customer.

One of the nicest parts is that you can pick the oranges and grapefruit you want from a large wooden bin located in the back of the store. The day we were there it was Navels and Red Grapefruit. But we are awaiting Honeybell season.

From large to small, there’s something for everybody and enough for all.

The Store

Yes, we did mention there’s a store at Maxwell Groves? It’s jam packed full of tasty treats. There’s a full selection of sauces and dressings, canned fruit and salsas of all different varieties. Maxwell’s also is an authorized outlet for the famous Dundee Citrus Candy. Their factory is just up the road a piece.

The Dundee Citrus Jams and Jellies are a big seller at Maxwell’s.

One of the newer additions at Maxwell’s is their wine corner. They have a full selection from the Florida Orange Grove Winery. You can find such things as Key Lime, White Gold, Honey Wine and Mango Mamma. They even carry the Black Gold semi-sweet and the powerful Hurricane Class 5 labels.

When we were there, the folks told us that they were creating a wine tasting room, and could even add a selection of Florida-based craft beers in the future.

Maxwwell’s Wine Corner,

Maxwell’s Sweets

But aside from the oranges, the two biggest draws really are the ice cream and the ambience. Go in, ring the bell and get a cone full of orange, vanilla or creamsicle .

We chose the creamsicle

The next step is to adjourn to the front porch and pick a rocking chair. You then can sit and discuss the day with many of the other customers who have done the exact same thing.

Sit a spell and enjoy yourself.

Before You Leave

Once you finish your ice cream, you can go back in and get whatever you need. Get the jam, jelly, sauce or salsa of your choice. There’s plenty of souvenirs and candy galore.

They have plenty of sweets -even orange bubble gum and….gator poop…..

And if you can’t take it with you, Maxwell’s is a bonded fruit shipper. You can purchase some of the best fruit Florida has to offer, then ship it right back to your house. It’s a great way to remember a great visit – or to surprise someone special – with a very special treat. Makes a great gift for Christmas, or any occasion.

Real Florida sunshine shipped right to your home.

About Maxwell’s

Maxwell Groves was established in 1935 as a caretaking operation. They managed groves for people who had come from the north – and other places – and invested in the citrus industry. Over the years, Maxwell’s got into growing and packing citrus. Finally, they were one of the last small packing operations in the state.

They opened the gift shop in 1980 and now are listed as the Number One attraction in Avon Park by reviewers on TripAdvisor. We also note, this is a must-stop while you are in central Florida. Sit for a spell and have some good ol’ Florida orange ice cream.

The Cypress Gardens Ski Team Lives On

When we visited the old Cypress Gardens, one of our most memorable experiences was watching the ski show. But after the Gardens became Legoland in 2011, we were saddened that the show would “never be the same.” However, as fortune would have it, the Cypress Gardens ski team lives on.

On a recent trip back to Winter Haven, we found it’s not over. On many Saturdays, the Cypress Gardens ski team still puts on quite a show. The audience sits on the shore of Lake Silver. They view much of the same sights we saw at Cypress Gardens back before the turn of the Century.

At the show we attended, we got the feeling we were back at the old Ski Show Stadium. Even “The Voice of Cypress Gardens” Mike Markowitz, was back behind the microphone, calling the action.

The iconic Cypress Gardens ski pyramid is the finale of the show.

We watched the Rampmasters do flips and helicopter spins off the ski jump. There was the Swan on the Swivel with her 360-degree spins on a special ski. We saw a great adagio performance with a father and daughter team of Paul and Mali O’Connor doing lifts. And the finale was the signature Cypress Gardens ski pyramid.

The father- daughter team of Paul and Mali O’Connor does adagio

The Team

Led by Former Show Director, Mark Voisard, the Cypress Gardens Water Skiers decided they did not want the legacy of world-class show skiing to die with the closing of the theme park.  That’s when they formed a new team.

Their goal was to to pass on their water skiing skills to the next generation. At the same time, they brought nostalgia to those of us who remember the old show and the beauty and excitement of Cypress Gardens to new generations.

The Rampmasters do a “720.” That’s over the ramp, and twice around before they hit the water and keep on skiing.

It was great to see former skiers from Cypress Gardens still performing. Even former Cypress Gardens ski show director Lyn Novakofski and Mark Voisard were there to help build the iconic ski pyramid.

Also inspiring was the number of young children who were learning the tricks of the trade. There were young Aquamaids skiing in unison and there even was a young, disabled man named Joe Guthrie, jumping the wakes on a specially constructed “sit ski.”

A Special Treat

Winter Haven’s own Keith St. Onge,  “The King of Barefoot Skiing” did a performance at the Show. He boasts 19 National Overall Champion Titles and multiple world titles. After launching upside down, he proceeded to ski the show ring backwards.

Pulled backwards by the Mastercraft power boat, Keith St. Onge gave the crowd a thirll.

Great Inexpensive Entertainment

This is a great outing if you are in the area. There is no admission charge. However, they do have concessions, a 50-50 drawing and straight out donations to help underwrite the effort. The shows are not low budget. There were special costumes for the Oktoberfest show and the Halloween show promises to be just as well prepared.

You can put down a blanket in the grass or bring your folding chairs to watch the Cypress Gardens Ski Team perform on Lake Silver in Winter Haven.

The History

Before Walt Disney World and the rest of Central Florida’s sprawl of tourist destinations there was a family-owned theme park known as Cypress Gardens.  Cypress Gardens’ founder, Dick Pope, filled the park’s landscape with gorgeous flowers, beautiful Southern Belles, then added a thrilling water ski show.

The first ski show took place in 1943 and – until the theme park closed in 2009 – held the distinction of being the “longest running entertainment production in the world” – just ahead of Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus.

Cypress Gardens may be gone as such, but we were thrilled to find the ski show still is continuing. If you are going to be in the Winter Haven area, check out their schedule and make plans to attend.

There is both a Cypress Gardens Ski Team website and Facebook page for those who want to find out more about the team and their show schedule.

Indian Rocks Beach Makes for a Great Gulf Getaway

Our recent trip to Indian Rocks Beach showed us that IRB makes for a great getaway on the Florida Gulf Coast. Like our opportunity to stay at a condo at Anna Maria Island, this also was a condo experience.

Our Place

Our stay at the Da Vinci at Indian Rocks Beach cemented our opinion that staying at a condo is a very good option. This time our accommodation was right on the Gulf. In fact, it was a two-bedroom, three-bath suite with a living room, dining area, kitchen and a balcony that oversaw the water.

Our balcony oversaw the Gulf

It was great to sit out in the early morning Gulf breeze and watch the boat traffic, the joggers and the dozens of shore birds out for breakfast. Moreover, because it was a condo, we could sit and have breakfast made in our own fully-equipped kitchen.

It is great to have a breakfast of organic eggs, fruit and your favorite coffee while enjoying the view and the Gulf breeze.

The fact that we could have a leisurely breakfast at our own place gave us ample opportunity to plan for the day – while enjoying the sights and sounds of the Gulf – literally just yards away.

The “early bird special” brought all manner of shorebirds to the beach just in ftont of our condominium.

Indian Rocks Beach is on a barrier island between the Gulf of Mexico and the Intracostal Waterway. You can head north to Clearwater Beach or South down to Treasure Island. While we were there, we headed south and explored Redington Beach and Maderia Beach.

While in Maderia, we had the opportunity to go to John’s Pass Village & Boardwalk. That in and of itself is a day’s worth of activity. Heck, with all John’s Pass had to offer, you could spend a couple of days investigating everything they have to offer from shops to dining. They also have a wide array of waterborne experiences including tours, fishing outings and watercraft rentals.

Of course, when it came to the water, our condo had a pool and a hot tub. And just on the other side of the fence was a wide expanse of beach where we could go swimming in the Gulf or just sit and watch the sunset.

There’s nothing quite like the quiet sunset over the Gulf.

Dining

Naturally, we found some really great places to eat. Near to our condo was the local favorite called the Kooky Coconut. That little place on Gulf Boulevard also was accessible for us by a short walk down the beach.

The Kooky Coconut is famos for their sandwiches, ice cream, decor and laid back attitude.

The Kooky Coconut might best be known for their hot-pressed cuban sandwiches. In addition, they have fresh burritos, tacos and quesadillas, tuna salad and a variety of other beach-friendly eats. We indulged ourselves in their selection of ice creams. Thirsty? Drink choices are just as varied. They have beers and wine, energy drinks and soft drinks.

They also have a small gift shop featuring everything from shells to T-shirts.

We also had an opportunity to lunch at the famous Maggie Mae’s Sunrise Cafe. Their location in IRB has both indoor and outdoor seating. But our advice is, sit on the back deck and look out over the Intracoastal. The atmospheric conditions make the food taste that much better by half.

Yes, the view at Maggie Mae’s Sunshine Cafe is THAT good.

One of the most quirky and fun places to dine was The Sweet Sage Cafe & Boutique at Reddington Beach. They have breakfast, lunch, a lunch buffet – and being a dog-friendly restaurant – there’s “dog friendly dishes.

These are folks that pay attention to what they’re doing. From the kitchen to the servers you can expect a great little dining experience. Just as many of the places we visit, the ambiance of The Sweet Sage Cafe brings a lot to the table so to speak.

There’s a lot to see at The Sweet Sage Cafe.

In addition to the cafe, there’s also a cute little boutique. There was not a lot for me, but Mrs. Funmeister had a great deal of fun browsing the selection of of gifts, jewelry and clothing.

In Conclusion

In the end, this was another vacation that begs us to return. There were a number of things for which we did not have have time. One of them is a trip on the Royal Conquest pirate ship which is docked at John’s Pass.

And after seeing the beaches and Gulf waters from IRB to Maderia Beach, we also have a great desire to pay Treasure Island a visit.

Joe’s Eats & Sweets – A Great Treat at Anna Maria Island

When last we visited Anna Maria Island, we were at Bradenton Beach and found Joe’s Eats & Sweets. It’s an absolute destination location and Joe’s is as much fun on the inside as it is on the outside.

They are quick to tell you at Joe’s they make all their ice cream on site. Moreover, all of their flavors are made with the best ingredients. “From the cream to the cherries” they want their creations to be the best for their customers. For instance, the strawberry ice cream is made with strawberries, just as banana ice cream is made with bananas.

After an exhaustive taste testing, we can report their statements are accurate.

Joe’s Eats & Sweets is difficult to miss.

Joe’s Sweets

Of course, you can get traditional chocolate and vanilla ice cream. But we also spotted more exotic flavors such as Key Lime Cheesecake, Cotton Candy & Nerds and even Funfetti Cake Batter. In all, we counted nearly 40 different flavors from which to choose.

And that was just the ice cream.

But wait! There’s more! Joe’s has Banana Splits, Sundaes and Floats. There’s also the Raspberry Truffle. That’s Joe’s chocolate ice cream covered with raspberry puree, real whipped cream, chocolate sprinkles, with a cherry on top.

For you morning beach people, Joe has the Coffee Lover’s Dream. That’s coffee ice cream topped with coffee syrup, real whipped cream, and – naturally – topped with a cherry. That’ll wake you up!

Other Treats

There are other great edibles as well. We saw Rice Krispy Treats, Fudge, Pretzel Sticks and were introduced to Conewiches.

Yes, the Conewich is another of Joe’s creations. It starts with a homemade waffle cone, then it’s stuffed with a variety of different ingredients.

One features chicken nuggets, lettuce and tomato topped with a Queso sauce. If you prefer something different, you can build your own. Joe’s has a choice of meats including roast beef, turkey, ham and roasted chicken. Their sauce options include Ranch dressing, Honey Mustard, BBQ, Ketchup and/or Mayo.

For those who want to live on the edge, we were offered a Conewich featuring Chicken Nuggets in a nest of Mac & Cheese. We figured we’d do that next time.

Dining Options

One nice thing about Joe’s Eats & Treats, you can eat inside or out. There’s a spacious dining room that overlooks Gulf Drive. You can even get a glimpse of the beach, and occasionally see a boat or a jet ski cruise by while you enjoy lunch or dinner in the air conditioning.

The dining area at Joe’s is spacious, comfortable and bright.

We ate inside and had a wonderful time. But if you’re an outdoors type, Joe’s has an outdoor upper deck, and a ground level seating area where you can enjoy the great Florida weather and some of Joe’s tasty treats.

One of the things we liked best is that there’s a covered parking area underneath the restaurant. You can park there while you eat. It shields your vehicle from the weather and is within easy distance should you choose to eat in the lower dining area.

The underneath parking area at Joe’s is cool – in more ways than one.

And before you ask, we’ll tell you. Yes, they have sugar free, lactose free, gluten free or fat free if you need it. They have yogurt and Joe’s also offers a Lunch Menu served all day with sandwich choices & Nachos.

Joe’s has been doing business on Anna Maria Island for nearly three decades now. And even though they have lots of experience, it appears they’re always trying something new. When the hungries hit on AMI, Eat At Joe’s – it’s a great option.

DeLand’s Artisan Alley – Don’t Miss it

We have written about DeLand in the past. Recently, we found a little community nestled inside their Historic downtown. Dubbed “Artisan Alley,” it is dotted with interesting shops, restaurants and clubs that are in a three block area just off the beaten Path.

The sign that says you’re in the right place.

Finding it is Half the Fun

It really is pretty easy to find Artisan Alley. The narrow street runs off DeLand’s West New York Avenue, smack into South Georgia Avenue. In fact, the intersection tri-sects the three block area. This little place has some of the most interesting restaurants and shops found anywhere in Florida. And for us it was an easy walkabout.

We already have blogged about Bake Chop. By far, it is one of the tastiest and most fun dining experiences we have had since we started traveling.

Bake Chop is fun, extremely tasty and comes at a good pricepoint.

And there are a lot of very cool shops in the Alley as well. One of the most interesting we found is Florida Victorian Architectural Salvage. The brace of rooms is filled with old doors, posts, windows and commercial signs. It’s like walking into an episode of “American Pickers.”

From Commercial signage to furniture and fixtures, Florida Victorian Salvage is crammed with interesting pieces of the past.

The place evokes all kinds of nostalgia and interest. It really can get your imagination and creative juices flowing. You may just walk home with a real “find.”

Drinking and Shopping

There’s also Nest. Described as “a gift shop and bar, they boast a myriad of interesting pieces. The stock includes jewelry, glassware and wall hangings – as well as a collection of unique furniture and artwork. The owners have an eye for the quirky and unusual from cards to socks.

You can bet that whatever you take home, someone will ask, “Where did you find this?”

Nest is a wonderful and interesting little shop.

Nest also serves wine and beer so you can sip while you shop. From time to time, a local troubadour will come in to provide music to shop (and drink) by as well.

If you like to imbibe, the Persimmon Hollow Brewing Company is nearby. It is the culmination of a dream of home brewers and best friends, Robbie Carelli and Andy Sistrunk.

In fact, they just marked their five year anniversary. How did they celebrate it? With a full menu of special craft brews. Have you ever tried Tart Cherry Berliner? How about Bourbon-Barrel-Aged Freddy Fitz? Those are just a couple of the selections only found at this unique operation

Then there’s Cafe Davinci. It is described “as a local watering hole that provides for a perfect space where friends can hang around and enjoy long conversations over endless rounds of drinks. But it is so more than that.

Starting in 1993 as a jazz club, Cafe Davinci has increased in size and scope to embrace many kinds of music. They have a small indoor bar, which opens into a 5,000 square foot outdoor courtyard. Surrounded with palms and other plants it has outdoor facilities and a stage as well.

The Davinci Courtyard is stylish, spacious and a great place for a party.

Other Shops

Scullery Kitchen Provisions by Blake Elliot is just across from Nest. They provide local goods and unique items curated from around the globe. We found it to be cool and stylish with a wide array of goods.

The Scullery is designed for Mrs. Funmeister. In other words, those who love to shop, cook and entertain. We found beautiful pottery, dishes and flatware. But it doesn’t stop there. There’s kitchen towels and aprons, barware and cocktail provisions. In addition, you’ll want to see the jams, jellies and other foodstuffs.

There are amazing finds at Scullery Kitchen Provisions

There’s also Renee’s retreat. Renee is a licensed Aesthetician with more than 25 years of experience in both spa and dermatology.  She’s combined the two to create a tranquil atmosphere with professional treatments designed for your skin.

Her Mineralogie Mineral Make up is 100% mineral based cosmetics and contain the most pure, natural ingredients free from harsh chemicals.

The Florida Society of Goldsmiths also has a studio there. The FSGNE is a not-for-profit organization created by metalsmiths to aid and support other metalsmiths. They offer all manner of classes and seminars on hand-crafted metal work, including – but not limited to – jewelry.

Artisan Alley Garage

Then there’s the cavernous artisan alley garage. About the same size of the Davinci Cafe Courtyard, this 5500 square feet of space is under roof. The opportunities are endless. From banquets to weddings, concerts to filming there are few limitations. Owners say it has been used for all of those things and more.

The night we saw the Artisan Alley Garage, it was part of the weekly farmer’s market.

Farmer’s Market

Once a week, the Artisan Alley Farmer’s Market takes over the narrow streets with a group of food trucks, entertainers and makers.

The Stoked Poke food truck dishing up diced raw fish = as either an appetizer or as a main course

There are all sorts of interesting booths. Items include everything from sculptures to natural soaps and essential oils. There’s a vendor with antique and re-creation signs, another with fabric wear and accessories and even some farmers featuring selections from vegetables to raw, local honey.

Once a quarter, the DeLand Indie Market is held. This is a curated show that showcases vintage, boutique, art and handcrafted items. While the weekly farmer’s market pulls several dozen vendors, the Indie Market can draw over 100. Sadly, it is held on Sundays, so we cannot attend.

In conclusion

Whether there is a special event or not, Artisan Alley is a fun little place to visit, and one of the most special locations at one of our very special places – DeLand.

Refining our Night Light System

0

We have been trying to refine our night light system as we travel. We started with a light-sensitive night light in our bathroom to provide a bit of illumination during the dark when we are in an unfamiliar hotel room.

Our original light sensitive bathroom light.

However, there have been times when there’s no light socket in that portion of the room. Or worse, the lights that are in there are so bright and so near the bed it makes sleeping impossible. Not to mention how it blinds you when you actually go in to use it.

The Solution

We thought we had the problem licked. when we got a small candle-like light at the dollar store. While it worked well, we later switched to a votive-style candle. That both takes up less room in our travel basket and provides better illumination.

Our red candle does not provide as much illumination as the votive-style light,

A New Idea

However, with the onset of Halloween, we have found yet another option that works better yet. We discovered a taper-style candle which provides slightly more light and is tall enough to catch the bathroom mirror in most hotel rooms.

Incidentally, we have found that getting that reflection really adds to the amount of light in a very dark place. It provides sufficient illumination to see when you are in unfamiliar surroundings.

The taper=style candle seems to be the best option yet.

This candle needs a couple of AA-sized batteries to make it run. This means it’s a bit more expensive than our first two attempts – which came 2-to a pack and with their own batteries.

The best part is that all of these were found at the everything’s a dollar store. This taper candle was a dollar, and we got a pack of AA batteries for another buck.

Our three attempts at lighting a room with no electrical socket.

In the end, each provides enough light to find your way around a small bathroom area in the dead of night.

We leave them burning all night. And so far, they have not yet run out of electricity. They are both handy and easily transported. For the cost and convenience, getting one or more of these options will save you from a lot of bumping into things and stubbed toes.

Rock City Gardens – Much More Than a Nursery

So we were on our way to wonderful Wabasso, when we spotted Rock City Gardens on Highway 1 – just north of Vero Beach. It looked fairly interesting from the road, but until we reviewed our “Things to Do,” on TripAdvisor, we didn’t know it qualified as an attraction.

When we stopped by, we found out why. It is more than a nursery, it is an experience.

Our Arrival

The entrance into Rock City Gardens

One of the first things we discovered was their store. It was full of items both for interior and exterior decor. There were the obligatory pots and wall hangings. There were chairs and tables, lamps, vases and baskets. Wind chimes and all manner of statuary were available for indoor and outdoor use as well.

There were plenty of custom tiles in the Rock City Gardens store.

The Outside

Heading out the back door, we found table after table of plants ready for sale. Although this was not the season yet for planting here in Florida, we found a wide selection. Mostly they were ornamentals. There were ferns, palms and flowers. Later, we found a legion of empty tables that would be full as soon as growing season would arrive.

The covered planting area gave way to a path that led us to the signpost. We quickly learned that Rock City Gardens not only has demonstration landscape and hardscape areas, it also has a wonderful area for weddings and photo shoots.

Rock City Gardens is three facilities in one.

We headed down the nature trail. In doing so, we found that the wedding stage and the hardscape retail were intertwined throughout their back lot. There were bubbling fountains, fireplace settings, sitting areas, pergolas and all manner of different venues. All could be re-created on your property – for a price.

But the thing that struck us was the serenity of the place.

A quick walk through Rock City Gardens.

In addition to the wonderful features one encounters in their walk through the winding pathway of Rock City Gardens, is the attention to the order in which they are constructed.

It is easy to see that whoever is in charge of the layout has a wonderful eye to guide the visitor through the various vignettes that are on display. It is easy to enjoy the day. Sit here for a while, or sit there.

This fireplace setting is one of the many hardscape venues at Rock City Gardens.

The History

Since 1983, Rock City Gardens has been owned and operated by Tom and Rhonda Lowe. The Lowes purchased the nursery from the Chapins, second-generation owners of the Tennessee tourist attraction, Rock City.

The Chapins were also seasonal residents of nearby John’s Island. Under Tom and Rhonda’s new ownership, and with a new vision for growth, the garden shop was expanded, greenhouses were built for the ever-growing flower production, and the grounds are continuously upgraded and beautified.

The fruits of their labor became even more famous in 2004 when the Lowes received the prestigious S.J. Blakely Award for outstanding landscape design of a business in the nursery industry.

One of the many landscape stands at Rock City Gardens.

A Must See

It is easy to understand why this is a destination point for those on the Treasure Coast looking to do a photo shoot, have a wedding ceremony or to find landscaping ideas for their own yards. It is tranquil, it is beautiful and it is free for those who wish to browse the grounds.

They refer to it as “Seven Acres of Inspiration,” and it is. There you will find landscape design ideas, container gardens and hardscapes. Their staff can guide you to plants and give advice on the care and feeding of their stock.

Our recommendation is, that you budget some time as you head north from Vero Beach on Highway 1 and visit Rock City Gardens. And leave some space in the car for some of the special treasures you may find there.

A Dream Condo Vacation on Anna Maria Island

Anyone who follows us, knows we have stayed in many hotel rooms, but recently we had the opportunity to enjoy a condo vacation – at beautiful Anna Maria Island no less. Sandy Hampton contacted us and offered to let us try her condo at the Bradenton Beach Club.

Unit 226 was handled by Seabreeze Vacations. It stands in great contrast to our hotel stays.

Sandy is a vacation home owner and renter who has high standards and wants to make sure her guests have a perfect vacation. In fact, that’s why she chose Seabreeze to manage her rentals. Adrian at Seabreeze was available and helpful during our stay.

Check In

When we arrived, there was no front desk, no waiting for another couple to get finished until the clerk could get to us. We simply drove to the inside parking area, found our designated space and put the funmobile down. It was as simple and convenient as that.

On our initial trip to our unit, we took the stairs. But an elevator is available. That’s quite handy for hauling the luggage from the car to the room. We loved that there was no key. Instead, there was a simple electronic pad with an easy-to remember code that locks and unlocks with ease.

Sandy had seen to all the arrangements. We just parked, then took our luggage inside. No muss, no fuss.

The inside parking area is spacious and well lit. The elevator at the far end makes access to the higher floors quick and easy,

Our Accommodations

We were pleasantly surprised when we opened the front door. The suite was bright, cool and airy. It had all the comforts of home.

The condo at the Bradenton Beach Club had everything one might desire. From a fully-appointed kitchen to a screened-in lanai – very little is left to chance.

Unit 226 is a three-bedroom unit with a master bedroom, a guest bedroom and a children’s nook. There’s two full bathrooms, a kitchen with all the appliances, a living room, dining area and a screened-in lanai. Ceiling fans are in each of the rooms – which makes cooling quite easy.

The children’s room is accessed through a pocket door. There’s a bunk bed for sleeping. There’s also a shadowbox coffee table, a cabinet-full of games and a flat screen TV.

In the living room there’s a great flat-screen TV. It has cable service so there’s something for everybody. But who has time for that? There are two nice pools and a hot tub at the Bradenton Beach Club that are readily available. Plus, there’s a private Gulf beach literally steps away from this unit.

There was a very nice pool and hot tub just next to our building.

Our First Night

Once we got unpacked, we decided to find a bit of a snack before heading to the beach. That was a snap. The Smoque House, one of the top local restaurants on TripAdvisor is adjacent to the Bradenton Beach Club. It was just steps away and then just a few more to the beach.

At the Smoque House, we dined high both on and off the hog. While I had their famous pulled pork sandwich (with cole slaw on top,) my wife had the vegetarian barbecue. Her side order of slaw was so generous, it became shareable.

Our sandwiches were filling and the cole slaw side my wife ordered, turned out to be a “shared” size.

The sandwiches were both tasty and filling. Moreover, they came at a very modest price point. We enjoyed it so much that we went back for dinner a second time during our stay.

After our dinner, we walked across Gulf Boulevard to see our first sunset together on Anna Maria Island.

The Beach

The Bradenton Beach Club’s private beach facility is located behind Building One. It is a wide expanse of open beach where you can swim, shell or sit and enjoy the day. There also are chairs, beach umbrellas and other equipment available for you to use to your heart’s content.

The first time, we simply stood among the shorebirds and a few residents as we watched the sun go down.

It was a beautiful sunset at Anna Maria Island.

Later, we took advantage of all the amenities at our disposal. We made our selections and headed beachside to enjoy the evening.

At the Bradenton Beach Club, it is easy to make the perfect sunset experience.

All of the necessitates for a romantic beach side picnic were available at the condo. There was a picnic basket and cooler bag along with a selection of matched beach towels.

We made our own picnic dinner with fruit, cheese, crackers and some herbal iced tea. There’s a shopping center with a Publix supermarket just a couple of miles down the road for just about any necessities.

It took a just few minutes to set up for the perfect romantic sunset.

Incidentally, if you want a beach that has all the commercial amenities, both nearby Coquina Beach and Manatee Beach have everything you need from concession stands to beach chair and umbrella rentals.

Experiencing Anna Maria Island

Anna Maria Island is perched at the end of Longboat Key. Officially, it encompasses the communities of Anna Maria, Holmes Beach and Bradenton Beach. More practically, it stretches from Coquina Beach all the way to Bean Point.

They call it “Seven Miles of Paradise.”

This is a place from which memories are made. It is peppered with specialty restaurants, shops and experience-oriented rentals. The best part is that the Bradenton Beach Club is in the middle of it all.

The first morning we slept in, and while having coffee on the lania we discussed what we would do for the day.

Heading north in Anna Maria, there’s the Historic Green Village. Located along Pine Street, there’s a myriad of shops. From resortwear to olive oils and cheeses, each storefront has something new to offer.

Who would have thought footwear and candy go together. The Flip Flop Shop & Candy Stop does. They also have a great array of toys and such for children.

If you are looking to dine, there are innumerable options. German, French, Italian and Asian restaurants are on the island as well as American fare. You can dine beachside if you wish. Everything from upscale to fun & funky is readily available and within a few miles of our unit at the Bradenton Beach Club.

To the south, there’s Coquina Beach and Historic Bridge Street, One place you do not want to miss is the Anna Maria Oyster Bar. Whether or not you like seafood, from the menu to the view – this place is hard to beat.

The view is as good as the food at the Anna Maria Island Oyster Bar on Historic Bridge Street.

If you don’t like to drive, there’s a free trolley service that runs the full length of the island with regular stops. There also are golf carts and beach buggies you can rent to explore the island. There are boat tours and fishing charters for those who want to get out onto the water.

There’s even a show boat with entertainment that cruises regularly at Anna Maria Island.

In conclusion

We cannot thank Sandy Hampton enough for our stay at unit 226 at the Bradenton Beach Club. The accommodations were impeccable and we could not have asked for a more convenient or well appointed place.

And Anna Maria Island was fabulous. We enjoyed a breakfast at Ginny & Jane E’s, shopped Pine Street, ate lunch at the legendary Rod & Reel Pier, stocked up at the Anna Maria General Store and ate ice cream at Joe’s Eats & Sweets.

We took hundreds of photos and videos. Saw all kinds of shore birds and water traffic. Plus, we viewed three gorgeous sunsets.

And there still were things we did not have time to do. Anna Maria Island is a Florida must-stop. Once you’ve gone, it begs your return. Maybe it’s time for you to contact Sebreeze Vacations and have an Anna Maria Island experience of your own.

Dining at Waldo’s in the Driftwood Resort

We were on one of our many forays to Florida’s Atlantic Coast when we came across Waldo’s at the Historic Driftwood Resort. Located in Vero Beach along the beautiful Treasure Coast, it was a wonderful experience in more ways than one.

We first wrote about Waldo’s Restaurant & Lounge in our blog about visiting wonderful Wobasso, Florida. The lunch more than met our expectations. It also inspired us to look into spending some time at the Historic Driftwood Resort in the future.

The Driftwood Inn

As the story goes, it was Waldo E. Sexton – an original Vero beach settler – who built the two buildings which now comprise the Driftwood Resort and the Waldo’s Restaurant in 1935. Apparently, it began as Sexton’s private beach house.

He called it “The Breezeway” because of the opening in the central portion of the first floor. Soon after it’s construction, The Breezeway became a small hotel. The restaurant, aptly named “Waldo’s,” came in 1947. Later, they moved some small fishing shacks into the complex as well. They served as rooms and shops.

It was in 2004 that twin hurricanes – Charley and Frances did major damage to the building. After a year of renovation it was restored into the complex that it is today.

The second floor of the Driftwood Inn overlooks the pool, Waldo’s Restaurant, the beach and out into the Atlantic. Downstairs is a bar and the indoor dining area for Waldo’s.

The Last of the Great American Hangouts

Our experience at Historic Waldo’s Restaurant & Bar was nothing short of fantastic. We found it while heading down State Road 60 and reviewing TripAdvisor recommendations for restaurants in Vero Beach.

When we arrived, we found there was both indoor and outdoor seating. We asked for an outside table with a view. The hostess could not have been more accommodating. Our table overlooked the beach and the bright blue Atlantic Ocean.

Although there was a brief sprinkle, we were protected by our bright red table umbrella. After the shower, we were treated to a bright Florida afternoon with beach goers, water traffic and great food.

The beachside seating is as delightful as the fare at Waldos.

By the way, I had the Backyard Burger which was ample to say the least. My wife had a giant pile of Nachos and salsa. Which was tasty. As in many beachside eateries, our drinks came in plastic cups. But with the ornate logo – ours became collectables.

Our Return to the Driftwood

One of our next goals is to return to the Driftwood Resort for an actual stay. There are oceanfront and non-oceanfront rooms. Also offered are one or two bedroom suites – some with a Jacuzzi. You can take your pick of a view. Some overlook the courtyard, others the pool and of course the oceanfront.

Our goal is a simple efficiency that has an oceanfront view. The idea is that we want to have dinner at Waldo’s at sunset – watching the water traffic then later a midnight dip in the pool.

Then, we’d like to wake up in the morning and watch a spectacular sunrise over the Atlantic. It is a worthy goal and a wonderful property.
