Why We Pray Before, During and After Trips

While we realize that not everyone who reads  Florida Fun Travel might be Christian, we are – and unashamedly so. That is why we pray before, during and after our trips.
For instance, many times we pray that The Lord will direct our path and take us to the right place at the right time. We pray He will put the right people across our path and make us the right people across the path of others.  To some, this might sound like a futile exercise.  However, I cannot tell you how many times we are led to the right lodging, the correct point of interest or the exact restaurant which we sought.

Following the Spirit

It seems like sometimes we have been taken to a very unlikely place, or perhaps even the wrong spot. But  on more than one occasion we have ended up exactly where we needed to be.
Traveling Florida
We also ask for traveling mercies when we go out on the road. The ways we have been protected (and others from us) are innumerable. From close calls on the interstate, to being led to the right turns it has been astonishing the way we have been led.

Follow Where He’s Leading

In our travels we have been put into the path of so many great people. Those include it is hotel/motel staff, restaurateurs, waitstaff and even other travelers. We cannot help but give praise to The Lord for where he has sent us.
One of the most obvious examples was when we decided to go to New Smyrna Beach for an Easter Sunrise Service. We ended up at the right church and had a wonderful experience meeting the members. For us, it was  a glorious early morning service.
We met Pastor Don Shobert and his flock. After the sunrise service we returned to the church for a breakfast and worship service.
In our travels we have been led to some very fun spots. For instance, just up the street from the church is Norwood’s. It is a restaurant, wine shop and bar. Our favorite spot was the upstairs – in the “treehouse.” The “treehouse” is an open air dining facility. We found the ambience to be wonderful. Moreover, the food is great and there is good, live music. Best of all – it’s not overpriced.
Another time we decided to go to Tarpon Springs for the Epiphany observances. Hosted by the St. Nicholas Cathedral, there were lots of activities. We saw the blessing of the fleet, the ceremonial retrieval of the cross, and the festival.
Again we had an opportunity to meet a lot of pilgrims who had come for the experience and The Lord helped us with so many things – from being at the right place at the right time – even to find good parking spaces.
That again was an answer to prayer with a great cultural experience as well as a very worshipful time,
We have had some times when we were frustrated, came upon places where we were not sure where to go and what to do – and in each occasion we received and answer.

It Does Not End at the End

Finally, we thank The Lord when we return, safe and sound. Our hope is that we have represented Him well as good disciples and lived within His laws and directions.
For those readers who are traveling Christians, we would suggest focused prayers of help and thanksgiving  before, during and after your trips. For others, we would suggest that a close personal relationship with The Lord Jesus Christ is the single most important thing you can do.

Florida Films mean Fun

0
We think that Florida films are fun. Moreover, we’ve found there are plenty of them! There are classics like Key Largo, Easy to Love and Kid Galahad. We discovered more recent offerings like The Longest Yard, Scarface and Wrestling Earnest Hemingway as well. Did you know there’s been more than 160 major motion pictures filmed in Florida?
  We didn’t.

 The List’s Author

In doing this piece, we found that Melbourne’s Mike Noga compiled the list of these films. It’s been published the internet site Imdb. He’s originally  from Southern Tasmania, Australia but relocated to Melbourne at the tender age of 18. It was then he embarked on a career that has spanned music, television and motion pictures.
Additionally, we found out that Noga has been one of Melbourne’s most prominent and active musicians. He’s played  with a number of bands – most notably The Drones, as a singer-songwriter/  Noga has produced a number of albums as a solo artist including “Folk Songs,” “The Balladeer Hunter” and “KING.”
As a cinematographer, Noga is known for his work on “Nightlife,” “The Canadian Country Music Awards” and “A Thousand Mistakes.”

The List

His list of Florida films is a compendium of releases ranging from the 1914 picture “A Florida Enchantment,” to the 2017 release “CHIPS.” Some are well known while others are lesser-known. However, all were filmed entirely or in part, right here in the Sunshine State.
The top five box office hits were “Scarface,” “The Truman Show,” “Easy A,” “Moonlight” and “CHIPS.”

Souvenirs

Some of the remnants of films in Florida remain to this day. for instance, The Florida-shaped swimming pool is at Cypress Gardens – which now is part of the sprawling Legoland theme park in Winter Haven. The boat “The African Queen” from the Humprey Bogart film now is owned by Suzanne and Lance Holmquist, who restored the interior but left the rustic exterior charm. They continue to  offer daily tours and dinner cruises on the Port Largo Canal.
There were places that served as sets, that actually still exist – such as the fire station in Sebring that was part of the film “Wilder Napalm,” and Tinsmith Circle in Lutz – which served as the backdrop for the neighborhood in Edward Scissorhands.
Those who follow us know we love to promote Florida. We believe a lot of these locations have a high potential to be Florida Fun Zones are are looking at a couple of road trips in the not too distant future – stay tuned.
For those interested in a Florida filmography- Noga has done one here

Vacation is more than a Destination

0
Exploring Florida is half the fun.
Over the years, we have learned how to plan a vacation – and that many times, a vacation is a whole lot more than just our final destination.
As I was growing up, our idea of going on vacation was to blast as hard as we could to get to our destination, in an effort to spend as much time there as possible, then get in the turnpike and blast home in time to be back at work or school.

Exploring Florida is half the fun.

However, as I have gotten older, my focus has changed somewhat. My wife and I now take longer routes to and from our intended destination. This allows us to go off the beaten path a bit – in search of stores, restaurants, entertainment, attractions and points of interest that we did not have time for on the way to our destination.

How We Travel

Make no mistake, we still sometimes make tracks in an effort to “get out of Dodge,” – especially if there is a festival we need to get to at a certain time. There also are times that although we hustle to get somewhere, we then make plans to leave a little early so we can have some fun “noodling” our way back to the house.

Generally on the way there, we spot a billboard, a restaurant, a town or a point of interest we’d like to take in, so we look at it on the internet and make note. Then on our return trip, we can take an alternate route, maybe a less traveled state road that provides a leisurely trip back which gives us an opportunity to explore.

Kissimmee’s Monument of States is quirky and fun

Taking the Back Roads

I generally do the driving and I can tell you that many times, the secondary roads we take on the way back are just as smooth and well maintained as any interstate but with a fraction of the traffic. There might be the occasional stop light, but it is a small price to pay when there is virtually no truck traffic.

In fact, many times there is no traffic at all, and you have the opportunity to hit a place that was a tourist stop back before “the interstate highway went through.”

Finding Hidden Gems

Yes, Florida is a lot more than the major theme parks and you can have a really good time stopping in some of the smaller towns that have periodic events and festivals. There are many places that have first, second or third Friday night events. From classic car shows, to art walks, to food truck rallies, the merchants stay open late and there are lots of locals that can tell you about fun and fascinating places to go.

Once you figure out how to plan a vacation, it’s easy, fairly inexpensive and we can help.

Here at the Florida Fun Travel, we post weekend events on Tuesdays and Wednesdays on our Facebook page, and some we even post here. We try to review the best restaurants and places to stay so that those exploring Florida have a good idea of what a given area has to offer.

Microtel is usually a good choice

There are some hotel chains we rely on to hit that sweet spot in accommodations, and if we cannot find a funky little restaurant, there are some go-to chains on which we can rely. Even still, there are sites like Trip Advisor that have reviews by travelers that are very helpful to us when we are unfamiliar with an area.

So when you visit our widely divergent Sunshine State, our recommendation on how to plan a vacation, is that you leave yourself a bit of “disposable time,” to look about. You might just find a hidden gem and the highlight of your vacation.

Daytona to Host Klingon Feast

0

We love Star Trek and we found a great event. The Daytona Klingon Feast. It’s listed as one of the 11 most Unconventional Conventions by SyFy Wire. And this year’s gathering will mark two decades of fun.

We’re told the Feast  is a weekend event planned, produced  and presented by fans for fans. No guest stars – just Klingons. There will be games, food, drink and fun.  All this leads to the great time and annual Feast on Saturday night. All species invited including HUMANS. They say Klingons (at least THESE Klingons) play well with others.

It again will be held at the Best Western Aku Tiki Inn on Atlantic Blvd in Daytona Beach.

What’s Up

Planned are a Friday pool party (with a Synthahol contest), and an “Anything But Trek”  costume contest. We also saw on the schedule a Tribble Relay, Klingon Jeopardy and a Klingon Escape Room Challenge. Saturday will feature workshops on the Meaning of the Klingon Oath. We look forward to the celebration of Kot’ bavl, klin-zha. But the big draw might be the arm wrestling and warrior contests.

Unlike other trekkie conventions, no guest stars or dealers are planned. It will be just Klingon enthusiasts doing what Klingons do.

Where are the Tribbles?

Of course,  Klingon Feast without a feast?  Bring your bat’leh and go boldly to the annual Klingon Feast. Don’t worry – you won’t get stared at for having a ridged forehead, because everyone has a ridged forehead. You’ll probably look out of place if you don’t appear to have the DNA of House Martok.

The cuisine of this alien species may be hard to swallow on Star Trek. However nobody has to eat anything of questionable origin — or anything that’s still moving.  Remember to bring your qutluch.

The 20th anniversary celebration will be one you will not want to miss.

Those wanting more information may go here or the KlingonFeastFlorida Facebook Page.  If you attend, let us  know how you liked it.  Those who follow us know we like the wild and wacky.

Planning a Fun Florida Fall Vacation? Many Are…

0

We see that the summer travel season is now over. But we understand many Floridians are not ready to put their luggage away.  In fact, we read a new AAA Consumer Pulse Survey that reveals nearly three-quarters of Florida residents will take at least one vacation sometime from September through November.

A Fall Vacation is a Good Idea

“There are many advantages to a fall vacation,” said Matt Nasworthy, Florida Public Affairs Director, AAA – The Auto Club Group. “The weather cools off and students are back in school, leaving smaller crowds at popular attractions. As a result, travelers find more availability and competitive pricing on airfares, hotels and rental cars. This is why Americans love to travel this time of year.”

Gas Prices Forecast to Fall 14 cents

We see that the 51 percent of autumn travelers planning to take a road trip should find lower gas prices.  AAA forecasts gas prices nationwide will drop to $2.70 per gallon.  That is 14 cents less than today’s average price at the pump.
“Gas prices usually follow a downward trend in the fall, due to lower demand and the switch to a cheaper-to-produce winter-blend gasoline,” Nasworthy told us. However, U.S.-led sanctions against Iranian crude are expected to kick-in this quarter. If oil prices spike on supply concerns, gas prices may jump too.”

Travel Insurance for Hurricanes

We have found that the early weeks of September are often the most active time of hurricane season. And our experience shows major storms can cause a ripple effect of travel delays and cancellations affecting travelers nationwide. More than a third of Florida travelers now say they are likely to purchase travel insurance during their fall trip, due to the threat of hurricanes this year.
Take our advice – don’t wait until a major storm develops to start researching travel insurance. Once a storm is named, it’s too late to purchase a new policy. Our recommendation is to talk with a travel agent, research weather patterns in your travel destination during the time of your visit, and consider purchasing a policy when booking your trip.”
Hurricanes aside, we think you still should consider travel insurance for your next vacation. A delayed or cancelled flight can cause missed reservations or excursions – many of which are often non-refundable. Those and other out-of-pocket expenses can be offset by travel insurance.
In addition, we have found there are policies that allow you to cancel your trip before your departure date, for a variety of reasons such as falling ill. If you get sick or injured during your trip, there are policies that would cover medical expenses.

About the AAA Consumer Pulse™ Survey

So we found the AAA Consumer Pulse™ Survey.  Our understanding it was conducted online among residents living in Florida from August 3 – 14, 2018.  A total of 400 residents completed the survey, with 297 planning to take at least one fall vacation.
Survey results have a maximum margin of error of ± 5.7 percentage points.  Responses are weighted by gender and age to ensure reliable and accurate representation of the adult population (18+) in Florida.
Those who follow us know we like to vacation all year ’round in Florida. So the bottom line is, plan to take a fall vacation. But take our advice, make certain to get some travel insurance and have a great time in the Sunshine State.

Action is the Word at Sebring International Raceway

As the summer ends the annual baking of central Florida, action is the word at Sebring International Raceway. But all the activity won’t be on the track.
Oh, there will be plenty of cars on the circuit over the next 120 days or so. However, officials at SIR have at least one festival for those who just want to enjoy the ambience of the 300+ acres that comprise the historic motorsports facility.

Drag Racing

At the end of September, the track will host nearly back-o back drag racing events. On Thursday, Sept. 27 they will come off their summer break and host the first of the winter season’s regular drag racing bill. The races are for local amateurs to test their reaction times and car speed down the eighth mile stretch of the historic front straightaway.

On September 29 will be the inaugural “The Battle of the Bridge..” Presented by Safety-Kleen at Sebring International. This will be a special event – featuring three different classes of racing and drift competitions. There also will be a car show and a Power Wheels race for youngsters.

Music & Fun

On October 13, the focus will shift from the track to the paddock. The raceway will host their first-ever craft beer and music fest. Dubbed the Brew Jam Grand Prix, the event will combine a wide selection of craft brews, food and live music.

Three popular Sarasota-based bands will perform starting in the afternoon and continuing on into the night. Multiple Florida breweries will provide sampling opportunities for their individual products.

In addition there will be a watch party on a giant TV as the Petit Le Mans IMSA road race roars around Sebring’s sister track at Road Atlanta.
“Sebring knows how to party and this will be a great one,” said Sebring International Raceway President and General Manager Wayne Estes.

Road Racing

November will see a return to road racing. That’s when the Michelin SportsCar Encore has it’s first-ever run at Sebring’s historic 3.74 mile circuit. This competition will feature four classes running the track simultaneously. during the four hour main event.

There will be the LMP3 prototypes, as well as the production based GT3, GT4 and TCR divisions.

On the Saturday of that race weekend, there will be a Mazda MX-5 race, which may prove to be the hardest-fought competition with a reported $50,000 up for grabs.

That weekend also is slated to have a big Saturday evening concert as well.

Historics

Then on November 30, the Alan Jay Pistons & Props event returns to Sebring International. It’s the biggest vintage racing event of the year at SIR.

“This event celebrates both Sebring as the birthplace of American endurance racing and also Sebring’s military history as a World War II B-17 bomber training facility,” Estes said.

Some of the track’s straightaways began life as runways at Hendricks Field, which now has become the Sebring Regional Airport, which is adjacent to the track.
Vintage race cars and airplanes will be on display, with the cars engaging in a number of racing events by class around the 17-turn road course.

More Racing

It all began at the start of September with the annual appearance by the Champ Car Endurance Racing series Presented by RVA Graphics and Wraps, They staged a 14 hour endurance race.
The Champcar Endurance Series is “about tearing down high-dollar roadblocks that, in the past, have restricted people with a passion for cars and racing from getting fully engaged and involved in motorsports.”
While you’re there, we recommend you stop at Seven  – The Sebring Raceway Hotel.

For information on these events and more at the Sebring International Raceway call (863)-655-1442 or visit http://www.sebringinternationalraceway.com

Fixpresso – A Coral Gables Fun Zone

We recently have been alerted to a new place in the south end of the state that has all the earmarks of a Florida Fun Zone. Fixpresso is the destination for great coffee at a fixed price with everything on the menu set at just $2 each. Food and beverages – from latte coffees, chocolate croissants, to turkey sandwiches – are available at affordable prices. Fixpresso also offers other hot and cold beverages, healthy choices, pastries and sweets.

Inside the store, guests will see a very cool SUBWAY TRAIN, where the food and beverages are served. The train is part of the restaurant’s “Four F” mission statement:

Fixed: Every menu item at a fixed price-$2
Fast: Customer Service
Fun: Everyone loves the train!
Food & Drink: Great!

The Umbrellas of Coral Gables, part of a traveling art exhibit, recently were taken down in the city. Many people were unhappy, and Fixpressp owners decided that they did not want the display to go to waste.
So in a bold move, the everything $2 coffee and food shop, now has recreated the interactive art pieces on the ceiling of their cafe in a beautiful floral pattern.
“The umbrellas were hung on a fishing line from the ceiling. It took over 15 hours to complete. We want to make people smile when they walk into our coffee shop and we want to bring enjoyment to people,” said Fixpresso founder Scott Deutsch.
The umbrellas display will be available for customers’ viewing pleasure for the next month. The rotating umbrella installation will then switch each month – featuring different designs, which are chosen by a local committee of individuals. The criteria for selection was (not necessarily in this order)  Fun, Happy and most familiar.
It looks to be a fun, inviting and tasty locale. Those wanting more information may find it here.

Farm 2 Fork – The Hot New Eating Trend

There is a new trend among foodies called Farm to Fork or Farm to Table. In fact, there already are several restaurants in Florida capitalizing on this movement. There’s Florida Fields to Forks in Malabar, Farm to Fork Meals in Oakland Park and Farm to Fork Fresh Market in Fort Pierce to name a few.
The movement promotes serving local food at restaurants obtained through direct acquisition from producers. Sometimes there is a direct sales relationship such as a market or produce on sale at the checkout counter. The idea is to know where your food originates.
In Florida, there also are scores of fairs, festivals and celebrations of local food and foodstuffs such as the I Like it Hot Festival in Pinellas County, Let’s Eat Englewood in Sarasota County and The Taste of Honey Festival in Hillsborough County, Those and more such Florida Food & Farm festivals can be found at their website here
When we went to Frostproof earlier this month, we discovered a new little restaurant. Called P&J’s Farm 2 Fork, using the decor of an old barn, this eatery in the heart of citrus country embodies one of the latest hot trends in the foodie world.
It was the brainchild of Billie Sue Hutto, the owner of the local pool hall next door known as PJ’s Recreation. Her idea was simple – sell local food to local people.
The notion is outlined at the top of the menu, saying that they believe in improving what we eat – and a big part of that is the ingredients. Farm2Fork works with local farms and growers to develop a menu that “excites the taste buds and reminds you what fresh food is.”
The selections apparently are the creation of restaurant manager and chef Trisha Runnels. She eschews the title “chef,” pointing out she never went to cooking school. Rather, she developed her skills working under a number of chefs and spending the better part of her lifetime over a stove.
Looking at the selections also is a new experience for many. There’s the “Pick of the Pasture” where customers literally can build their own dish. Starting with a base like pita bread, a salad bowl, Cilantro Lime Rice or a couple of tacos – you can top it with varieties of chicken, steak or pork, then add vegetables to taste. Toppings include; Tzatski, Herby Mayo, Local Ranch or Bleu Cheese to name a few.
Then of course there’s a full line of sandwiches. Choices include the Frickin’ Chicken, the BELT (a BLT with an Egg to boot), the southern favorite Fried Bologna, Smoked Salmon and of course the Herbivore for vegetarians.
Did somebody say sides? Maybe you’d like Duck Fried Potatoes, Fried Green Tomatoes, Poutine or some good old Pita Chips and Hummus.
However, these are subject to change without notice. As the harvest changes, so will the menu. Hutto, a fourth generation Frostproof native,  said that most of the ingredients come from the Frostproof area, then Polk County, then central Florida, Florida and the Southeast. The idea is to stay as local as possible.
Management and staff were working hard to keep customers happy.

And the service is as good as the food. It truly is Southern hospitality. Although they apparently had a “soft opening” for locals, the day we were there was the first official day of operation. Waitresses were scurrying about like crazy and the kitchen was a literal beehive of activity.

The one caveat we had is that with barn wood on the walls, hardwood floors and ceiling panels, the place has a tendency to be a bit loud at times – especially with the crowds they draw. However, it is a small price to pay for the quality of food and the very affordable pricepoint.
PJ’s Farm2Fork is located at 35 South Scenic Highway in the center of downtown Frostproof. They are open from 11am to 11pm Monday thru Saturday. For more information you can call  (863) 635-3276, visit their web page at www,pjsfarm2fork.com or see their Facebook page at PJsFarm 2 Fork.
We would recommend you just go on down and pay them a visit, Your tastebuds will be glad you did.

The Glamping Experience in Florida

0
Have you ever been Glamping? Do you even know what it is? The word actually is a contraction of “glamour” and “camping.” It describes a style of outdoor accommodations with amenities and, in some cases, resort-style services not usually associated with “traditional” camping as we know it.
It’s a lot more than hiking to a destination, pitching a tent and starting an open fire to cook dinner
Those in the know say glamping is a way for people “to experience stunning outdoor areas without having to forgo their creature comforts.” The glamping “movement” is growing – so it comes as no surprise there actually are lots of places in the Sunshine State that such glamorous camping facilities are available.
Some are so comfortable and decked out, they might even win over those who’s idea of “roughing it” is a hotel without room service.
In fact, Glamping today encompasses many different ways to enjoy the great outdoors including (but not limited to) tents, villas, cabins, lodges, teepees and tree houses,
The concept of luxurious outdoor living is not new. In fact,  one such example was noted in the 16th century, when the Scottish Earl of Atholl hosted a lavish experience in the Highlands for the visiting King James V and his mother. The Duke pitched a series of exquisite tents and filled them with all the provisions of his own home palace.
But that’s only one example. There are hundreds more, with nobility and the wealthy bringing all the modern conveniences of their particular age along with them, as they found the most beautiful places on earth to enjoy.
The word Glamping – as an expression for the practice – apparently first appeared in the United Kingdom in 2005 and was added to the Oxford English Dictionary the in 2016
Glamping indeed is a global phenomenon- featuring unique and exotic locals ranging from mountaintops to islands and from deserts to rainforests, However, our focus is Florida and our friends at Trips to Discover have picked a handful of examples of Glamping across the Sunshine State – you can read Charity De Sousa’s article here
Going glamping can be a fun and unique experience. Just remember to bring your wallet.
