The Wellness Benefits of Travel

0

The wellness benefits of travel are unmistakable. We have written in the past about the health benefits of travel. Now our friends at the U.S. Travel Association have added their voices to something we have said for a long time.

It is an undeniable truth – going on vacation, discovering new attractions, dining in new restaurants and staying in fun lodgings simply makes us feel better.

We’ve heard the saying “Everything will kill you, pick something fun.” To the contrary – rather than being fatal, we have found that travel actually has extended our lives and our enjoyment.

The Survey Says

A new survey conducted by happiness researcher Michelle Gielan also shows that’s correct. She’s the founder of the Institute for Applied Positive Research and an expert in the science of happiness.

Her numbers show 97% of respondents say that having a trip planned makes them happier, while 82% reported that it makes them “moderately” or “significantly” happier. Seventy-one percent reported feeling greater levels of energy when they had a trip planned in the next six months.

We agree. Our experience has shown that even planning for a trip puts us in a better mood. And the closer we come – the happier we get. Calling and making our reservations, looking at restaurants we’d like to try and seeing what kind of attractions suit us are all part of the process.

And Gielan says we are not alone. Her numbers indicate

  • 95% agree that “simply knowing there was something to look forward to would bring me joy”
  • 80% indicate that “planning travel for some time in the next six months would bring me happiness”
  • 74% agree that “Planning something would make me feel more in control amidst so much uncertainty”
  • 96% reveal that “Getting to travel and feeling safe while doing it would bring me peace of mind”
There’s just something about hitting the open road that’s emotionally satisfying

Never A Better Time

We were glad to see these numbers. As far as we are concerned, there’s never been a better time to travel. A poll by the Associated Press shows Americans are experiencing the lowest levels of happiness in 50 years. That reinforces previous research that finds an inherent sense of happiness and satisfaction is generated by the mere act of planning a future travel experience. In fact, anticipating a trip might even have a stronger positive effect than reflecting on one that has already happened.

In our opinion, that’s spot on. Make no mistake, we love to reminisce about places we have been. But the thrill of planning a new trip always has a special excitement.

While public health is the top priority, the need to get moving again as soon as safely possible is urgent for jobs and the economy. Travel supported employment for one in 10 American workers before the Cronavirus hit. Sadly, more than half of those jobs were lost between the onset of the situation and May 1.

Recently we talked with US Travel Association President and CEO Roger Dow. He told us the travel industry is committed to being fully prepared for the moment travel demand returns. The idea is to keep its customers and workers safe and healthy and to restore those jobs as quickly as possible.

Bouncing Back

Those who follow us know we love to find fun and funky new places in the Sunshine State. And one thing our travels prove is that the travel industry in Florida is resilient. The memories and experiences we have cannot be replaced – nor can they be taken away from us.

Gielan says that booking a trip—even just getting it on the calendar— “might be the very thing people need to restore their emotional immune system after months of mounting uncertainty and stress.”

We can confirm that. Let us also speculate that booking lodgings, making reservations and purchasing tickets provide a great lift to the spirits of respective hoteliers, restaurateurs and other vendors of goods and services catering to the tourist trade.

A nice tip for a hard working waitress is a welcome sight.

In Conclusion

We have written about a AAA study that showed those who travel reported better emotional and physical health. It also found improved relationships and productivity at work.

Those of the baby boom generation get great health benefits during a trip. Some indicated they experienced health benefits before, during, and after the trip equally. Most boomers credited their travel health benefits simply to relaxation and fun.

The survey also indicated that Millennials experienced a far bigger benefit from planning a trip than boomers.

Any type of travel, whether it’s a weekend getaway or a week-long trip, can be an effective way to renew and recharge. That is why we created Florida Fun Travel. Our idea is to travel in search of the quaint and quirky locations around the Sunshine State.

It’s also why we advocate “taking your fun with you.” We find that people get out of a vacation about as much as they put into it. Our experience has found that no matter where you go in this great state, there’s always something interesting to see and experience.

We certainly do love to travel.

In Search of Soft Serve? Surf’s Up in Haines City!

When it comes to soft serve ice cream, Surf’s Up Ice Cream Shack in Haines City might be one of the best kept secrets in central Florida. It’s a great location for soft serve and other chilled treats. Plus it’s a destination point for fun (especially if you have kids).

Again, we were tipped to this place through a post on the Polk County Restaurants & Reviews Facebook page. Actually, it was lucky that we saw it. Finding this place without our GPS would have been a challenge. It’s tucked in off Lilly Avenue just north of the Haines City downtown area.

When we first walked up, we could see the place is flavorful.

Lots of Choices

As we walked up, the Surf’s Up folks had a banner announcing that we had two dozen choices of soft serve from which to choose. Rounding the corner we saw that there were lots of entertainment choices as well. But I’ll have more on that later.

There’s a little ramp where we walked up to the office to order. There, we were greeted with even more options. In addition to the soft serve, we could have had Italian Ice, Vanilla Custard or Hawaiian Shaved Ice treats.

Incidentally, they have non-dairy, sugar-free and low fat options available for those who wish.

The gal behind the counter told us they had a variety of combination “signature flavors,” as well as some Surf Board Floats. It all looked so good. But we had just eaten at The Pantry,” so we settled for a couple of simple cones.

Just some of our additional choices.

Under normal circumstances, we would have headed on down to the “Flavor Shack” to pick up our order. But because we came in at a slow time of day, they brought our cones up to us.

We were delighted to see the way they were served. They were not “simple.” Our orders were served on their sides in a plastic banana split boat, and topped with a toasted marshmallow. We could have had it in a bowl. Our options there included, “Little Dude,” “Average” and the “Big Kahuna” portions.

I had an Amaretto cone while my wife opted for the Butter Pecan.

Entertainment Options

I told you we’d discuss the entertainment options – and there are a lot of them. The owners have taken the property and covered it with crushed gravel. The resulting expanse has been dotted with pastel colored picnic tables, various kinds of games and surfer decor.

Walking through the front gate we were greeted with this fun outlay.

Walking about we counted a foosball game, a basketball throw. dart toss targets and beanbag pitch goals among the games of skill for young and old alike. Oh, and the darts were the suction-cup variety which also were safe for kids of all ages.

Most of all, we were fascinated by “The Ocean Theater.” This is a giant outdoor TV screen. As it was explained to us, they play cartoon and kid-friendly videos there in the evening. Customers can park themselves on the gravel and watch family-friendly presentations while consuming sweet treats.

Entry to the Ocean Theater.

Good For All Occasions

As my wife pointed out, The Surf’s Up Ice Cream Shack would be good for a reward for children who had done well in school. I was thinking it could provide a sweet ending for a date night with my wife. Their selection of soft serve ice cream and other treats is hard to top (although they do offer toppings).

In any event, this is a really fun place with a quality product. I told my wife that we would be back at a time where we could sit outside and enjoy ourselves. They are open Monday – Wednesday from 4-8pm and Friday – Sunday from 2 – 8pm. They are closed on Thursdays.

As we said, they are a bit off the beaten path. Like us, set your GPS for 950 Lily Avenue, Haines City, Florida. Most of all, be prepared to enjoy yourselves. We did.

Who’s Ready for a “Staycation?” We Are!

We were delighted to see that Governor Ron DeSantis and Visit Florida have teamed up to encourage the idea of a staycation. This is what we have advocated since starting this blog.

Staycation does not mean actually to stay at home – it does mean, enjoy the Sunshine State.

It’s our opinion that there’s so much to see and do here, that’s an easy task. There’s always something new for us to discover.

Marketing

This new campaign will be seen on televisions. billboards, and social media sites. That includes our own travel blog. Would you like to see the ad? No problem, we have it for you right here!

Let us debut the new Visit Florida ad for you

The Numbers

Governor DeSantis told us that the state is down 60-percent on tourism. A recent press release sent to us by the American Hotel & Lodging Association indicated the Labor Day lodging would be down by that much as well.

However, that has not been our experience. We called several of our favorite hotels that already were booked solid. And for us, that is good news and bad news. We’re happy they’re making money – but we wanted to visit.

In the meantime, Visit Florida plans to spend $13 million to encourage people to tour the Sunshine State. We don’t think it will take nearly that much. A few pictures of the state’s beaches, some of our great restaurants and attractions would do the trick.

Here’s a great place to stick your toes in the sand.

Places to Go

Let us pose a couple of questions to which there are no wrong answers. Do you like the Gulf or the Atlantic? Do you like a riverside or perhaps a lake setting? We have been to them all and we have had a great time.

People ask us, which do you like best? We like all of them. Our self-stated mission at Florida Fun Travel, is to have fun while we travel. For us, the height of the coronavirus presented an opportunity to prepare for our next round of travel.

As the state opened up, so did we. Our trips took us to Vero Beach, Okechobee, Clermont and Venice (among other stops). And our plans are to keep traveling, enjoying and blogging about our love of Florida..

Tourism

Tourism is one of the pillars of Florida’s economy. Did you know that it accounts for 1.5 million jobs and $91 billion dollars? Those are figures we’ve just learned.

Our plan now is to take a staycation. That is to continue to travel Florida, find new attractions, new places to stay and of course – great dining opportunities. Join us on our Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest pages and let us know what you find.

The Pantry – Already One of the Best Restaurants in Polk County

So, we are always looking for new and innovative places to eat. The Pantry in Auburndale is new, innovative and already may well be one of the best restaurants in Polk County.

We first heard about this place on the Polk County Restaurants & Reviews Facebook page. Fortunately, we already were headed in that general direction on another errand. So we decided to hop off US 27 and head west on Hwy 17-92 and try it out.

Our little trip turned out to be a tasty one.

The Pantry is so new, their sign is a printed banner.

Locating the Pantry

Although it’s worth the trip, it’s not easy to find. Thank The Lord for our GPS. The Pantry is located on an outparcel of the Auburndale Wal-Mart location. We were directed to the west side of the property and immediately found a parking spot.

Inside we found a spacious dining area. They also feature a party room where patrons can hold special events. The walls are decorated with historic pictures of the city. The Pantry bills itself as “A Modern Diner” and it is just that. Unlike many diners it is open from 6am until 10pm.

Inside The Pantry it is spacious, with high ceilings and tasteful decor.

Our Orders

Those who follow us know that we look for restaurants that pay attention to the fare they serve. For us, it was easy to see that the owners were working hard at just that. They bring their customers a great dining experience.

When we arrived, the hostess greeted us and called our waitress – who then took us directly to our table. Candice (our waitress) then gave us our menus and took our drink orders. We first got our drinks, then were presented with a surprise appetizer. It was a pair of biscuits with individual dollops of strawberry-infused butter, blueberry-infused butter and regular butter.

Our biscuits were a great surprise.

I can eat breakfast for any meal, so I ordered a spinach, mushroom and tomato omelet – which also included onions, Swiss cheese and an avocado spread. My home fries also came with a sprinkling of onion and green bell pepper.

My wife opted for the “Build a Basket” option. Her chicken sandwich came with Swiss cheese and a brioche bun that was simply delicious (yes, I got a bite). The spring mix salad that came with it was as large as some dinner salads. Moreover, the balsamic vinaigrette dressing was very light and flavorful.

Our lunch at the Pantry

This was as delicious a lunch as we have had anywhere. Moreover, it came at a good pricepoint.

The Menu

Browsing their menu makes us want to come back and try other selections. Breakfast orders encompass a wide array of egg combinations, omelets, skillets and offerings from the griddle. Lunch options range from soup & salad, to burgers, sandwiches and entrees.

They also have a sweet choice of sides and appetizers. I intend to get an order of “gator bites” on our next visit. I also noted they offer “fried cape shark,” meaning I potentially could get two predators in one meal.

Seriously, the quality of the food and excellent service is the kind of thing that encourages us to return and bring some friends. But admittedly we have to hurry – this place has received overall rave reviews.

In addition to our biscuit – another nice surprise came at the end of the meal. Candice dropped off a pair of complimentary snickerdoodle cookies, wrapped in a special envelope and sealed with a signature sticker.

The Managers

The Pantry had been open less than a week when we visited. It was bustling with service help. One of the managers stopped by to chat with us about the current menu and future plans. Our waitress Candice also did a great job promoting the restaurant while being a great server.

And if you want to take some of The Pantry home with you, (besides the cookies), they also have signature jams and jellies for sale.

This really is a destination location and certainly on its way to being one of the best restaurants in Polk County.

Coronavirus Makes Travelers Keep Their Distance

0

It looks like this whole coronavirus situation has travelers keeping their distance. Our friends at the American Hotel & Lodging Association sent us a copy of a travel survey. It shows something we have said for years. Improvements to health and sanitation protocols would have considerable impact on guests’ comfort levels staying at various lodgings.

The top three include face coverings both for for employees and guests, suspending daily housekeeping of rooms and reduction of direct contact.

These priorities align with AHLA’s Safe Stay Guest Checklist and CDC recommendations distributed on behalf of the industry. However, we have been doing things to make certain that the rooms we stay in have been treated.

What We Do

Those who follow us, know that we have a diffuser and use essential oils to deodorize and purify the room. We also carry our own water for drinking purposes. However, we have not been overly concerned about face coverings or direct contact.

Our diffuser loaded with essential oils and ready.

In fact, the combination of face coverings and plastic shields have made it difficult to communicate on several occasions.

The Survey Says

Among the key concerns of the 2200 travelers polled for the survey about the coronavirus situation:

  • Cleanliness was the Top Priority: Out of a list of nine options, frequent travelers most often chose cleanliness as the most important factor when determining their next hotel stay, It showed 81% were more comfortable staying at hotels now. It cited enhanced protocols and standards.
  • Guests Prefer Housekeeping by Request Only: The poll indicated that 88% of the respondents frequent travelers wanted housekeeping to be “by request only.” In fact, 58% of the  guests didn’t want daily housekeeping. They indicated they would not be comfortable with housekeeping staff entering their room without advance permission.
  • The Use of Face Coverings is a Priority: The survey said 62% of those questioned said they would be more comfortable if hotels require face coverings, And 66% of guests said they would be more comfortable if hotels require employees to wear face coverings and gloves.

What’s Next?

Officials of the AHLA told us that the coronavirus situation has decimated the hotel industry. We already knew that travel has slowed significantly throughout the last few months. We know ours has.

They say that the fall looks to be equally challenging. Their survey shows that only a third of frequent travelers expected their next hotel stay to be within the next three months. There also were 18 percent planning to travel within three to six months, and 25 percent in 6-12 months.

Our Plans

Our plans have been a bit different. We are aching to travel again. That being said, we are looking for places without mask mandates. In the recent past, we have traveled to Vero Beach and Venice. Both trips were wonderful events.

We are ready to roll out.

We have taken a few day trips like our recent forays into Lake, Okechobee and Polk counties. Stay tuned, we’ll be blogging those soon. And remember to like our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts.

The Crooked Spoon is Straight Up Good

While checking restaurants in Clermont we came upon the Crooked Spoon. We found it at the intersection of Citrus Tower Boulevard and US Highway 27 in the shadow of the famous Citrus Tower. Actually defined as a “Gastropub,” this place is a wonderful dining experience.

The Crooked Spoon has both indoor and outdoor dining

A Gastropub

I actually had to look up “gastropub.” Apparently it is a pub specializing in high quality food. In our opinion, the Crooked Spoon more than qualifies on both counts. First off, they have a very large bar, although it was not populated the Saturday afternoon we were there.

They have a well stocked bar with plenty of space

In addition to the well-stocked bar, the Crooked Spoon has plenty of dining area. In these days of social distancing, that means they could have plenty of customers – spaced sufficiently by any measure.

The photo does not do justice as to how much room there actually is in the Crooked Spoon.

Our table was the second one down in that photo. We had plenty of room and then some. Although the chairs were solid wood they ended up being pretty comfortable. In cooler weather, the restaurant also has outdoor seating that could be inviting during the evening hours should we come back for a date night.

It certainly appears to be one of the most versatile restaurants in Clermont for sure.

The outdoor area had dozens of tiny lights for illumination and fans to keep the air moving. It still was too hot for us.

The Burgers

We were drawn to this place by the menu. It’s the kind of restaurant that has all kinds of interesting combinations. It certainly makes us want to go back again and try some of their other menu selections.

I at first was drawn to the burgers. My natural move would have been to default to the Crooked Spoon Burger. How could I turn down their signature sandwich? The Florida Angus beef, Swiss cheese, onion marmalade, spring mix, tomato and chipotle aioli served on a brioche bun sounded inviting.

But I also saw the 420 Burger which was Florida Angus beef, Swiss cheese, candied bacon, with a fried onion ring, pineapple relish and honey mustard aioli on a brioche bun. In fact, there were several more burgers I saw that made it increasingly difficult to decide.

In the end – we both had a Cranberry and Turkey Sandwich.

So, I punted – and joined my wife with the Cranberry Turkey sandwich. This turned out to be a great choice. It’s house-smoked sliced turkey, Swiss cheese, cranberry chutney, caramelized onion and sage aioli, served between toasted multigrain bread slices. Moreover, it comes with their home made kettle chips – which may be the best we’ve had to date.

Sandwiches

As I said, there are lots of things here we’d like to try. Their Mediterranean Wrap, Pork BBQ and House Pastrami all sounded tasty. I was intrigued by the T.A.B.L.E sandwich as well. That is comprised of Fried green tomato, avocado aioli, Neuske’s hand-cut smoked bacon, lettuce, fried egg and remoulade. It also is served on toasted multigrain bread.

Don’t know some of the terms – it’s OK, they had many of them posted on the wall as decor for us to observe and learn.

Other Selections

The handhelds were just part of the menu. We saw a lot of appetizers and salads coming out of the kitchen that looked pretty filling in and of themselves. I saw a plate with a large stack of goodness heaped on top. When I asked our waitress, Nicole, told us that was their “Mountain of Bleu Cheese Chips.” It appeared it would have been enough for both my wife and me.

Other “starters” included Beer Cheese Fondue, a couple of different kinds of wings, Chicken & Waffles and a Hummus duet. I was very curious about the Duck Confit Tostadas. Those are described as crispy corn tortillas with cumin-lime vin, mixed greens, bean puree, duck confit, queso fresco and avocado crème fraiche.

I’d really have to have a sample first.

We also were enticed by the salads, I noted the Spinach BLT with arugula, spinach, pickled heirlooms, bacon Dijon vin, smoked bacon lardons, red onion, goat cheese and grilled crostini. Being a sucker for pineapple I also eyed the “Drunken Pineapple” salad – which was crispy prosciutto, shaved aged jack cheese, grilled red onion, mixed greens, rum soaked candied pineapple sprinkled with rum pineapple vin.

And that’s only some of the choices.

There was a large chalkboard in the dining room announcing specials of the day,

Of all the restaurants in Clermont – this menu has to have been one of the most diverse.

In Conclusion

Those who follow us know we like restaurants that pay attention to what they are doing. This place does. Our meals were made with fresh ingredients, generous portions and quick out of the kitchen. Our waitress Nicole was very attentive and answered all of our questions.

When it comes to restaurants in Clermont, we can highly recommend The Crooked Spoon and plan to drop in again the next time we are in Clermont.

The Showcase of Citrus is a Real Florida Experience

We may have found one of the best Florida tourist attractions just south of Clermont. Oh yes, we had seen the Showcase of Citrus countless times as we have driven on Highway 27. But we stopped in recently and realized how much we had been missing.

This place is a look at the real Florida and then some. There are monster truck tours through the 2,500 acre property. We also could pick all manner of citrus fruit in season. And the best part is The Old Time Country Store, where there are literally thousands of locally sourced products from which to choose.

Pulling in off Highway 27, The Old Time Country Store is the first thing we saw.

The Old Time Country Store

We really enjoyed browsing the store. There we found a wide array of jams and jellies. There were different kinds of honey, peppers, roasted peanuts, beef jerky, wine & beer and even bath products.

Just one of the racks of jams and jellies we saw.

One of our favorite parts of this place is that it’s absolutely littered with selfie spots. When we went over to look at the fried peanuts and jerky, there was a place for us to have our pictures made.

And there was this big seal we could stand in front of to show people where we were.

Then over by the peppers, there was a place where we could become a hot couple. We could just stick our faces through the holes and become instant peppers. My wife demurred, but here’s what it looks like.

We could have been a real hot number here.

During season, The Old Time Country Store also serves up some hot food. Options include grilled cheese, hot dogs and some yummy gator chili. Sadly, they were not serving the day we were there.

This is where they dish up the gator chili.

Out behind the store is a little playground. It’s well stocked with things for the kiddies to enjoy. We saw several families who were attempting to wear out their little ones before getting back on the road.

Slides, playhouses, kiddie cars and a lot of green area make up the playground.

Monster Trucks

Out behind the playground we discovered a couple of paths. One led to the U-pick citrus. The other path led to the Monster Trucks. Being a guy, I naturally was drawn to that area. We walked out around and discovered one of these huge machines.

The wheels alone were taller than I.

We would have had to walk up onto a second story deck to even get on the machine. Once onboard, we could have taken a ride through pastureland, swamps and native woodlands. All these ecosystems dot this 2,500 acre property.

They told us that during the roughly hour-long ride, we would have had a chance to see alligators, snakes, water buffalo and watusi among other things. Personally, I’m holding out to go back on my birthday with a gang of my closest friends.

Drive the truck on my birthday?

Other Attractions

There are other areas we did not have a chance to visit. There is a U-pick which features a wide variety of different kinds of citrus groves. As the season progresses from November thru May, we’ll have the opportunity to get varieties of oranges and grapefruit. There’s also lemons, limes and specialty fruits.

We noted a “gem mine” on the property. Purchase a bag of “ore,” then use a real sluice box to go in search of treasures. Among the things to be found are arrowheads, crystals, fossils, emeralds, amethyst, sharks teeth and shells.

Another feature we didn’t have time for was the animal farm. We saw the feed in The Old Time Country Store. Out back there are chickens, goats, pigs, a miniature horse, kangaroo, donkey, and other friendly critters waiting to be fed.

In Conclusion

Those who follow us know we like the fun and funky. This qualifies on both counts. And why do we think this is one of the best tourist attractions in Florida? It’s all of the best parts of the state all in one place. And the best part is most of it comes at no additional charge. The Monster Truck tours cost and we’d have to pay for the produce we purchased or picked.

But we were able to park for free and roam around just about at will. Plus, this place is rife with opportunities for photographs and memories that will last a lifetime. It’s all the best parts of real Florida wrapped up in a 2,500 acre package.

Why drive all the way to Key West when you can have your picture taken here?

In any event, we believe that the Showcase of Citrus is a hidden gem and one of the best tourist attractions in Florida. When you’re in central Florida near Clermont, you owe it to yourself to make it a stop.

The Egg City Diner – Great for A Happy Days Throwback

We were cruising up Highway 27 through Haines City looking for brunch. There, we came upon The Egg City Diner. Little did we know that in addition to a great meal, we’d get thrown back in time.

We pulled into the parking lot to a single story building. It was before lunch so there weren’t many cars. I can have breakfast for any meal, so this sounded like a good choice.

It was.

As we got closer we noticed the diner theme.

It’s a Diner

As we approached, the diner theme became more apparent. The red walls outside were bordered with checkerboard and chrome. As we got closer, we could hear the music of the 1950’s. We also began to pick up the telltale aromas of breakfast on the griddle.

I swung the door open and we were greeted by a metal police officer, asking us to wait to be seated. He also suggested we take some hand sanitizer while we were waiting.

The official greeter at the Egg City Diner

It’s the kind of metal statue used in the 1950s. They rolled it out into the middle of the street to slow motorists down in school zones.

The Decor

The metal officer was all part of the theme. There were records on the wall, old posters and giant murals. Stars of the show included Elvis, Marilyn Monroe and James Dean.

We sat under a giant mural of Marilyn Monroe.

We decided not to sit at the breakfast bar but chose a booth instead. I noted that the booths were padded and upholstered. To my eye, they looked much like the seats of a 1957 Chevy. In fact, they were as comfortable as they were stylish.

Oh, the breakfast bar looked nice too – we just weren’t ready to spend that much time on a stool.

There was at least one taker at the bar.

The Menu

Egg City is a diner – meaning that they are open only for breakfast and lunch. That being said, we were impressed with the size of the menu. For breakfast we had our choice of omelets, pancakes, waffles and french toast. Of course there also were the traditional breakfasts, biscuits & gravy or even mush.

Skimping is not something the Egg City Diner does.

I opted for the four-egg Greek Omelet, while my wife got a two egg breakfast. We both got the home fries and biscuit. Although not made on premises, the biscuits were some of the better ones we have enjoyed.

We got quick service and the kitchen cooked it up just the way we’d ordered it. No complaints here.

The Egg City Diner has lunches as well. We are looking forward to a return stop to try that menu. Among the selections there are Big Burgers, Deli Sandwiches, Clubs and their “Famous Reubens.” There also are a selection of salads and dinners.

Dinner options include fried chicken, pork chops, chopped steak and liver & onions to mention a few.

In Conclusion

Those who follow us know we like the fun and funky. For us, this was another happy accident. We’d stopped into this place on a whim. But we were impressed by the decor, the prompt service and the quality of the meal.

If you happen to be cruising through Haines City on Highway 27 – this is a great stop. It’s veteran-owned and a lot of fun. If you live in the area they have banquet facilities and catering is available.

Remember – get there early. They are open daily from 7AM until 2pm.

Our Travel Basket

Our travel bag

We have been traveling the Sunshine State for a couple of years now. One of the things we have developed is a Travel basket.

As we have gone from place to place it became quickly apparent that there were some things that we needed to bring along to make certain we were well prepared for our overnight stays.

We decided that a basket was the perfect place to keep things organized.

Our travel basket

What goes in our Basket

Over the course of time we have developed a collection of gadgets. Our travel basket is packed with items that allow us to have all our creature comforts and safety devices at hand.

Lighting

The first thing is lighting. When we stay in a motel or hotel room, it can be disconcerting – especially when we are on the road for a couple of nights. The rooms have different layouts and coming to bed in the dark can be a challenge. In fact, waking up in the middle of the night is even worse because we’re just not thinking straight.

While some places have a night light of some sort or another, other places do not. We found a wonderful little night light at the dollar store. Ours has a light sensor in it, so it comes on automatically when the lights go off. There always is a plug in the bathroom alcove and it provides just enough illumination to ward off falls, stubbed toes and the like.

Our night light, has a light sensor on the front – for just a buck.

Our bag also has a small tactical flashlight which we keep at the bedside in case of an electrical failure.

Not Enough Sockets

Making sure there are enough electrical outlets also can be a challenge. We generally have a laptop, phone charger,  and other power source needs for which some rooms are not equipped. Therefore, we carry a multi-plug to make certain we have enough outlets for our devices.

At first we carried a simple 3-bay plug (another dollar store find). Later, we found a 6-bay model which also has four USB plugs for recharging our phones and other devices. This has turned out to be particularly handy inasmuch as most motel rooms are under-USB equipped.

An Aromatic and Decontaminated Room

Another item we carry is a diffuser. This serves a number of purposes. Depending upon the kind of essential oils we use, it can detoxify the room, create a more calm and relaxing atmosphere, and simply make the room smell better.   Our travel diffuser is one we found on sale. It is a smaller model which is quite sturdy and is easy to assemble.

The URPOWER diffuser is a handy addition to our travel kit

To run our diffuser, we usually carry some purified water. This not only makes for better operation of our diffuser, but the balance can be used in the coffee maker in the morning. You would be surprised how much better your coffee or tea will taste when you do not have to rely on the tap water in the room.

What Time Is It

At home we have become spoiled with a clock that projects the time on the ceiling. You don’t have to break your neck or wake your partner to see the time. The nice thing about this model is that you can set it virtually anywhere in the room, project the image over the bed, and rotate the numbers so they are right side up overhead.

Other Things We Have

We also have a couple of coolers that we take. They plug into the cigarette lighter adapter in the car and can be set to cool or warm food. They also have a 110 volt adapter so we can use them in the motel room in the event the motel does not have a refrigerator.

Security

Finally, there is security. There are a number of precautionary measures we take and we won’t list them all here. But one little item we found has given us a great deal of solace. It is an alarm wedge we place under the door, If it is disturbed, it sets off an alarm that alerts us that there is a problem and we can respond accordingly.

There’s also a variety of other items that we carry like extra charging cables for our phones, a multi-tool with pliers, blades, screwdrivers and the like. It all stays in the bag and is pretty much ready to go each time we leave.

This might sound like quite a lot but it is not. We carry all these items in a converted picnic basket that comes along on our trips. Most of the items remain undisturbed from trip to trip so all we have to do is open, scan, close it and go.

You can read about all these items and more in our “gadgets” section.

Center Mass Gun Range – Fun For Shooters & Non-Shooters

Whether or not you have a gun – or are a shooter – the Center Mass Gun Range in Okeechobee may be the best shooting range in Florida. And we recommend it for young and old alike.

Those who follow us know we like the fun and funky. This place may not be funky, but it is fun. And it is huge. The owners told us that they’d carved the place out of a former pool supply company. It’s really a total shooter’s paradise.

To reach the Center Mass Gun Range, we had to turn off State Road 70 just before the bridge that goes over the railroad tracks, Watch closely – we almost missed it.

Virtual Shooting

At Center Mass we have had the opportunity to shoot live rounds. We also have had their virtual firing range experience. In fact they have seven simulation rooms. Inside we had our choice of hand guns or long guns to shoot laser beams at a wide variety of targets.

There are many different targets at the Center Mass virtual ranges.

In addition to zombies, we had the option of virtual wild west shooting, a pirate theme, hunting games, steel targets, simulated paper targets, a science fiction scenario and virtual clay & trap shooting among others.

We went virtual shooting with a couple of my wife’s friends and had a great time. The simulated shooting is great for kids and for people who might not be enthusiastic about pulling the trigger on real firearms.

Additionally, the virtual range offers skill building exercises, personal protection drills and law enforcement training. We found it to be both fun and educational.

On the Range

It was impressive to see the live fire ranges. We could shoot hand guns or long guns. The range officer at the site told us we could shoot everything from a .22 caliber and up. While we were there we saw folks with revolvers and semi-automatic handguns ranging from .380s to .45s.

There also were some shooters with long guns. One had an AR-15 and was shooting a long way down range.

Our favorite part was the high-tech system they had for setting our targets. The touch-screen system puts the target exactly where you want it, then brings it back for instant marking.

The bottom panel was for us to set our targets where we wanted, the top screen let us know the current price of ammo. They also provided disposable wipes for our hands.

Another nice thing was that Center Mass offered rental guns. This gave us the opportunity to try out revolvers, semi-automatics and/or rifles.

The Store

The first time we visited Center Mass, there were a few guns hanging on the wall and a few more in the showcases at the back of the store. Since that time, the inventory has grown significantly.

There literally were hundreds of options of firearms at Center Mass.

And it’s not only the firearms, there’s a varied and plentiful selection of ammunition, gun accessories, cleaning supplies and other associated products.

There were boxes and boxes of bullets at Center Mass.

The number of sales people on the floor was impressive. They were quick to help the customers. The folks we talked with were quite knowledgeable about the myriad of different products that were available.

Specials

Looking over their schedule it was easy to see they offer discounts for just about everybody. Mondays are Veteran’s Day, Tuesday is Ladies’ Day and Seniors’ Day is Wednesday. Simulation Day discounts are on Thursday with Machine Gun Madness on “Full Auto Friday.”

That is something I really want to try. Yes, I would like to have the opportunity to shoot a fully automatic machine gun – at least for a little while.

Taking a Break

They really have thought of everything. The entire place – showroom, ranges and the like – are fully air conditioned. They keep everything spotless from wiping down the display cases to sweeping up the brass casings in the live shooting range.

As far as we were concerned, the lounge area was one of the best amenities. We could sit down after shooting and talk about our experience. Or, had there been a full crowd, we could have waited in comfort for our lanes to come open.

The lounge offered overstuffed couches as well as widescreen TVs where we could see some of the action inside the ranges.

In Conclusion

We just have to say that this place is a lot of fun. Whether you’re a marksman, or just like to hone your skills. We have enjoyed both at the virtual range and at the live range. We’ve browsed the store and talked with the staff. All around, they were great experiences.

It’s an easy thing to say Center Mass is on target to be the best indoor gun range in Florida.

For something fun and different, you might want to make a stop in Okeechobee and try it out. By the way, the nearby Milking R Dairy is a great stop for ice cream afterwards.
