Doc Ford’s at Fort Myers Beach – A Must-Dine

So we’ve been to Fort Myers Beach several times and we always have wanted to try Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille. The last time we walked around forever and couldn’t find it. This time we got smart and put it in the GPS.

Put it in the GPS, drove across the bridge, turned left, then left then left again, then left then a right and suddenly – boom! There we were ! It was so easy!

Once we got there we found a huge complex. There’s indoor seating, outdoor seating and there’s a great bar. There also are facilities for special events, there’s even a little tiki hut for a band to play.

The good news and the bad news is we were there on a Monday afternoon. That means we did not get the full Doc Ford’s experience – but we did get a window seat with a panoramic view of Matanzas Pass. This provided a wonderful water show that complimented our lunch perfectly.

Watching water traffic from our table at Doc Ford’s.

Our group was myself, Mrs. Funmeister, our son and granddaughter. This was the best of all worlds. A vegetarian, a seafood connoisseur, a child and myself. We had an opportunity to try everything (except the rum, sadly) with people uniquely qualified to test them.

The Seafood

The calamari appetizer was, in a word, wonderful.

The seafood got high marks. The calamari was tasty and crispy without being greasy. The subsequent Seafood Paella was even better. As we were told, the blend of jumbo scallops, shrimp, mussels and fish medallions was a “perfect taste combination. That was highlighted by the sauce which he described as “Cajun in nature.”

The Doc Ford’s Seafood Paella

The Vegetarian

Mrs. Funmeister had the Margarita Flatbread. It’s a compendium of Buffalo mozzarella, roasted garlic, tomatoes with fresh basil. It’s all drizzled with aged balsalmic and aged olive oil. “Delish” was her assessment.

Vegetarian and “delish.”

And The Rest

I had the Sanibel Cheese Steak. It was piled high with shaved beef, caramalized onions, peppers and mushrooms. It was covered with melted cheese and so voluminous, I ended up eating the bulk with a knife and fork (not that that’s a bad thing).

The cole slaw, by the way, was actual slaw – not the mayonnaise-soaked chopped to smithereens fare which comes at other places.

Sanibel Cheese Steak with Cole Slaw

The granddaughter did not verbally review her grilled cheese. Suffice to say there was virtually nothing left and she ate her way into some of the longest french fries we have ever seen.

She did leave the pickle….

In the end, lunch was great. We also found several other menu items we wish to try on subsequent visits. Finally, the idea of a rum bar, and trying different brands of rum is intriguing. We will investigate this further (with a designated driver) and report back at a future date.

There are other locations, but it’s hard to beat Doc Ford’s at Fort Myers Beach.

Olde Englewood Village – fascinating & fun

As we have traveled through Florida we have come up on some wonderful historic downtown areas. We’ve visited Melbourne, Punta Gorda and Bartow to name a few. Located just off the Tamiami Trail south of Venice, the shopping area along Dearborn Street in Englewood is every bit as enchanting.

Also known as “Historic Olde Englewood Village,” it is a compendium of restaurants and small shops. The area makes for a nice stroll of an afternoon to see and enjoy all there is to offer.

Downtown Englewood is small but fascinating

The Shops

We started with the Sisters Unique Boutique where there was all manner of comfortable and casual clothing for boating or the beach. Then on to The Golden Mermaid Boutique with even more women’s clothing, jewelry, accessories.

Down the way there’s a great selection of classic, casual, colorful clothing at Basix on Dearborn and across the street is Ivy’s on Dearborn, a new lady’s boutique featuring brand names such as Oh My Gauze! Fresh Produce, Escapada, Zen Knits and also Vegan Leather shoes (which apparently are reversible).

Wait – There’s More

But Olde Englewood Village is a lot more than clothing stores. Scattered amongst the beauty salons, real estate, financial offices and other offerings – there were some truly unique spaces.

For instance, The Palm Studio & Boutique offers yoga, strength fitness and Pilates classes along with “an array of personal care & home products that enhance a beautiful life.” There’s the very aromatic Smoky Mountain Handmade Candles. They are a true, handmade candle maker that offers jar candles, coconut shell candles and can custom-make just about anything you’d like.

Down the way there were more unique stops such as Millie’s Trading Post and the Old Florida Outdoor Center & Gallery. At the Old Florida Outdoor Center, their idea is to “inspire and educate through art, history and adventure. Great pieces of Florida art coupled with some great front porch jam sessions.

The Dearborn Corner Market is a self-described “Convenience Store with a Fisherman’s Flair.” Located across the street from Buchan’s Landing Fishing Resort, the Dearborn Corner Market is a one-stop-shop for any and all fishing and boating needs. By the way – they are the only place for shrimp after 6pm in Englewood.

There’s a dozen or so shops inside this storefront

Perhaps one of the most intriguing shops was A Coastal Emporium. It was amazing how much they got into a relatively small space. There’s a dozen or more different merchants shoulder-to-shoulder in the shop. They range from Ms. Kitty – a healing medium with an array of crystals, stones and metaphysical supplies to Scott’s Coins who buys, sells and trades… well … coins.

There’s also Salty Starz – “Where primitive country meets the beach,” and Ariel’s Locker with hand-crafted shell art using treasures from the Gulf of Mexico.

Just across the street is The Arts Alliance of Lemon Bay. Described as an “Exhibit and Learning Center,” they feature as many as four dozen different artists at any given time.

The Arts Alliance features beautiful object d’art by local artisans.

There are photographs, oils, water colors and prints. In addition, they feature sculptures, carvings, jewelry and more. Because each piece is handmade, each is one of a kind.

Artists who rent a display area also must staff the store for a shift – meaning that the person behind the counter also can tell you about the artisan who made the piece you are going to purchase.

Dining on Dearborn

There are plenty of places to eat on Dearborn Street and each may be more unique than the last. We reviewed the Mango Bistro earlier and it truly is a must-see. However, don’t forget Vino Loco. They are a combination wine bar, tapas restaurant and retail wine & cheese shop. At any one time they have 350 varieties of wine from which to choose.

Let’s mention Joe Maxx Coffee Company. Billed as “The Best Cup in Town,” they feature a wide variety of specialty coffees, plus New York water poached bagels, Espresso, Latte’s, Cuppacino and Ohio chicken pot pies among other things.

Other eateries include Irving’s Coffee & Creamery. Run by locals and natives, they boast a great selection of coffees and teas as well as a selection of breakfast and lunch offerings. And there’s the Ole Time Cafe where there’s a great breakfast and lunch menu – plus their bread is homemade!

This is just some of what this quaint little town has to offer. We didn’t have the time or the appetite to try it all. But when you visit the Suncoast, a short trip south of Venice to Englewood and especially Dearborn Street certainly would be well worth your time.

Skinbuzz Sunscreen – an organic way to protect

2

According to our research department, this is “Beautiful in Your Skin Month.”  A while back, we reviewed an on-the-road skin care system called Skinbuzz.  Although Skinbuzz is made primarily for teenagers, Mrs Funmeister was sufficiently impressed with the organic ingredients that she decided to try their sunblock.

Its a small but effective jar and just the right size for travel.

Known as  Bee•Safe Organic Mineral Sunscreen- it’s a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB 30 SPF product. The cream designed as a fast-absorbing sunscreen that will clear blocked pores, It also “heals, moisturizing and brightening your skin.” Makers say it is  perfect for everyday use and safe for all ages.

Our field test proved that to be the case. It went on smoothly and protected well.

In Florida the Sun is Different

We have found in Florida it’s always the time of year to protect yourself and your loved ones from the ravages of the sun. Because Florida lies so close to the equator, it receives stronger and more direct sunlight than the rest of the country.

For you ladies, Bee-Safe also provides a base for makeup.  (Tip: Create your own tinted sunscreen by adding a dab of foundation to your Bee-Safe, mix in your hands and apply.)

The Field Test

We field tested this in Venice at a couple of different venues. First, we attended a downtown arts & crafts festival. As per directions, we worked nickel-sized amounts of sunscreen into the appropriate areas. We made certain to put some on the tops of our ears too.

It is a smooth and creamy texture

Because of the humidity, we have found it more difficult to keep sunscreen in place. In short, you sweat it off. So later, we had to re-apply it when we took a walk  on the beach. Despite the fact that the weather shifted from partly sunny to partly cloudy, then to overcast, sunscreen is almost always necessary.

Great Ingredients

As previously noted, Mrs. Funmeister is an organic type and was particularly impressed by a number of the ingredients – she liked that it contained Zinc oxide and Titanium dioxide as the active Sunscreen ingredients and that the other ingredients were natural and plant based. It goes on smoothly and is absorbed so the typical white evidence of the Zinc oxide is not a problem.

Even our fair and easy-to-burn skin made it through the day with no real issues.  We both love the Florida sunshine and are happy to have found a safe effective sunscreen,

Created by Nicole Sullivan, an aesthetician, the Skinbuzz line is created for teens. However, we were drawn by the products’ organic qualities. Moreover, our field testing have shown that they work. Yes, they cost a bit more but in the end, it’s worth it.

More Night Lights

In the past we have talked about the light-sensing night light that we carry so we can find the bathroom after dark. When you stay in different hotel rooms, things are not always in the same places.

From time to time, we stay in a place where they have bifurcated the bathroom. The sink and mirror is on one side of the wall, with the commode and shower in its own separate room. That’s fine, but there never are any electrical plugs there for your little night light. What to do?

The Solution

The Dollar Tree comes to the rescue again with these wonderful little votive lights.

They come two to a pack with 120 hours of life each.

These battery-operated candles have plenty of time, even when you burn them overnight. They also are not overly bright but still cast enough light for you to see everything you need to see. And the best part is – you don’t have to plug them in anywhere.

Do They Work?

During our field test, Mrs. Funmeister put the votive atop an unused plastic cup. This elevated it to the point where the light was reflected in the bathroom mirror and increased its illumination.

This little hack made the light work a lot better.

We also discovered that due to their low light properties, these votives can be used on tables or other flat surfaces. They then can illuminate a path to the bathroom and can keep you from stubbing your toe.

Once your eyes have adjusted, these little guys give just enough light to guide you.

A Wide Array of Options

There are many different shapes and sizes of these candles that can be picked up for a dollar. Some are larger, some are smaller. There are even taper-type candles if you need them, or bulbs mounted in everything from star-shapes to sandal-shapes.

You really have your choice to light the night for a buck each.

The bottom line, is that plug or no plug, these make a fine addition to your gadget bag. They are functional, easy to carry and inexpensive. You will be able to find your way and your toes will thank you for it.

The Mango Bistro is Funky, Fun and Good Eats

We stumbled on The Mango Bistro quite by accident and it was a lucky find. On Dearborn Street in Englewood, it is at the gateway to the little downtown area.

When we found it, we had been in search of a farmer’s market which apparently ended in May. The reviews we saw in TripAdvisor enticed us to go in – and it was a good choice.

The eclectic interior of the Mango Bistro is part of the fun.

Our first stop was for lunch. We found this place has a wonderful assortment of crepes, burritos, salads & bowls, paninis and melts. Honestly, it was difficult to choose. I finally settled on a Portabelo Melt with tomato, mozzarella and basil pesto, while my wife had the Italiano grilled cheese with tomato and rosemary.

The quality makes one want to return and try other dishes – and we did. A chalkboard menu on the wall promised “Live Music Fri & Sat.” Sadly, we had missed the Shark Sisters who had performed the week before. However, a duo called FeverTree was to perform the next evening.

A Return Visit

We came back for dinner Friday night and sat in the front porch area. It was a beautiful night – warm temperatures, a nice breeze and no bugs. We started with a Mediterranean Platter appetizer.

The appetizer was so generous it would have been enough for two.

Seriously, there was olive tappenade, humus, maranated roasted red peppers and feta spread with oregano – all served with a selection of breads.

They had a “Tuscan Grilled Burrito” on special that night with eggplant, tomato, goat cheese and sun dried tomatoes. Who could say no?

Live Entertainment

Possibly the best part was dining to the music of Taylor Opie and Emily Ross – aka FeverTree. They played a selection of familiar oldies as well as a number of original pieces.

Their sweet harmonies made the dinner that much better.

This is a great place to eat and a look at their menu will tell you why. They also have a Facebook page to enable patrons to keep up with what’s going on.

The menu, specials and Mango Bistro official coaster.

We can recommend this place and will be back to try other menu items. As good as they are, we understand there are some changes in the offing and we cannot wait to see what comes next.

Best Western – A Big Plus

We have stayed at a couple of Best Western Motels in the past. There even were a couple of former Best Westerns that had been converted under the Baymont flag. For the most part they were OK, but in the long run were not that great.

Our stay at the Best Western Plus Ambassador Suites in Venice changed all that.

Initial Impressions

From the first glimpse, the property is much more impressive than the internet pictures might indicate. From the hotel’s facade, to the portico and front lobby – this hotel is first class (at least by our standards).

Ron at the check in was quick and efficient. He even gave us a couple of purified waters to take to our room.

The suite was immaculate.

The Room

We’d asked for a king sized bed and a suite was the only way we could get one (they made us a deal). We were blown away when we opened the door. The room was immaculate. From the polished laminate floors to the accessories, the place was spotless.

The Best Western suite was outfitted for a week’s stay

The suite at the Best Western Plus has everything any traveler might need and more. There is the obligatory dresser with flat screen TV and a nice work station as well.

There is a breakfast area with a fridge, microwave, cupboard, Keurig coffee maker and a sink. They even have a roll of paper towels there for cleanup.

The couch was comfortable and there was an ottoman and a table for work or dining. A great closet space and a small dry bar sits in front of the bathroom. Those facilities also have plenty of space.

“One of the things that impressed me the most was the wall mounted magnifying mirror so I could do my makeup and see the back of my hair.”

Mrs. Funmeister

The Rest of the Property

Downstairs is just as impressive. There is a spacious breakfast area with no fewer than four different stations. The breakfast buffet has everything from a couple different kinds of waffle makers, to eggs, sausage, cereals and fruit. Biscuits and gravy also is an option.

The big Best Western waffles were personalized.

Just off the breakfast area is a second room that may be used for dining. It is a quiet area and there are sitting nooks as well as tables that might be used to play cards. The day we were there, a parent had a cartoon show on the big TV there to keep the youngsters entertained while they ate.

In addition to the sitting room, the Venice Best Western Plus Ambassador Suites features an exercise room, a nice little laundry facility and a great pool. It was bigger than the one at the hotel next door (just sayin’).

The Best Western pool was ringed with seating of all different kinds.

In Conclusion

We were there for two days and we did not have even the first problem. Our keys worked fine each day without having to be re-programmed. Our room was quiet and comfortable. The housekeeping staff spoke perfect English and saw to our every need.

If we had any issues, there were a few minor ones. There were no USB ports (we carry our own) and although there was a nice selection of coffee for me – there was no tea for my wife.

However, those were very small compared to the overall wonderful accommodations at the Best Western Plus Ambassador Suites of Venice. Find more about them here.

World Sponge Month = Trip to Tarpon Springs

0

According to our crack research team, June is World Sponge Month. And you cannot think of sponges without thinking of Tarpon Springs. In fact, did you know that Tarpon Springs is the “Sponge Capital of the World”?

We suggest a road trip is in order.

The Epicenter of Spongedom

Harvesting and processing sponges has been going on in Tarpon Springs for better than a century. It remains the world’s largest natural sponge producing industry – supplying 70% of the natural sponges around the globe.

Many as 18 different species of sponges can be found in the Gulf waters near Tarpon Springs. The wool sponge is the most desired because it is soft and durable. It’s not susceptible to odors or mildew.
The yellow sponge is a bit less durable but very functional. They last about a year. Then there’s the wire sponge – abrasive and often used for manufacturing.
The bay sponge – also known as the flowerpot sponge – actually can be used to grow a plant or seed.

Where to go

Most of these can be found at the The Tarpon Sponge Company. Located at the corner of the Tarpon Sponge Exchange, it has its origin back in 1911, when Emmanuel Klimis brought his sponge harvesting skills from Greece to Florida. His son Harry established the shop and now Harry’s daughter Athena runs it.

Tarpon Sponge Inc is a compendium of natural sponges and other treasures from the sea.

There are many specialty shops on the Sponge Docks that purvey sponges and souvenirs, However, one would be hard pressed to find a place that has a better selection of sponges, or anybody who knows more about the varieties and quality than Athena at the Tarpon Sponge Company.  The sponges continue to come in each day, with boats carrying huge bundles that need to be sorted and processed.

It’s More Than Sponges

But there’s more than sponges at Tarpon Springs. It has made our list of some of the most romantic locations in Florida.

There also are great events – such as the annual observation of Epiphany. Each year there’s a blessing of the sponge fleet, the ceremonial release of the dove, a mad scramble as young men dive into the water to retrieve a cross thrown in the Bayou by the Bishop and a large Greek festival that runs the balance of the day and into the night.

Each year the release of a dove set the stage for the throwing of the cross into the Bayou.

It was Greeks who came to settle the area and ply their skills harvesting sponges. Their influence remains to this day. There are some of the best Greek restaurants in the state all huddled together along Dodecanese Boulevard. Not only are there great Greek dishes served in the Mediterranean style, there also are delicious Greek bakeries with all manner of tasty treats.

Yell OPA when the saganaki is set aflame.

If you never have experienced the wonderfulness of the Greek culture – and real Gulf sponges, a trip to Tarpon Springs should be pn your bucket list. You can walk the docks, dine in the restaurants and take one of the many boat tours out onto the Gulf. It is a truly unique experience and is a definite Florida Fun Travel vacation destination.

The Sandhill Grill

We have visited golf course restaurants during our travels with varying results. Some have been good, some not so good. Recently we heard about a new place called The Sandhill Grill and decided to try it.

Nestled off County Road 17 between Avon Park and Sebring in Highlands County, the place has served as an eatery and meeting facility for the Pinecrest Golf Club. Like the course itself, the restaurant has undergone both renovation and rebranding.

The Sandhill Grille is unassuming from the outside.

One of the major selling points for us is that it has been taken over by a local restaurateur who has made a name for himself running two other longtime local eateries in the area.

A Great Decor

Unassuming from the outside, the Sandhill Grill was impressive to see the Sandhill Grill’s decor. There are two large dining rooms, a bar and a sitting area. It appears the living room-style pit can be used either as a holding area for when the place is full, or a conversation area overflow from the bar,

There are two large dining areas with a bar (in the back).

The bar is well appointed, with a full range of spirits, wines and beers. There also are five large flat-screened televisions. All are easily visible with each featuring a different sporting event. However, the volume was not loud enough to deter from patrons’ conversations.

The bar was inviting even if you don’t actually drink.

Like the bar, the seating pit was out of the direct line of traffic and provided a comfortable distance for those who were seated. Unlike the bar, the area is fairly unencumbered by most of the large screen TVs that dominate most of the rest of the restaurant.

The seating area with couches and chairs has a homey feel.

The Foods’ The Thing

Of course, the menu is what makes a restaurant and being at a golf course, they have a golfing theme. The starters are called “Chip Shots,” the salads “On The Green” and the sandwiches are “The Front Nine.”

The dinner menu has fish entrees listed as “Water Hazards,” pasta dishes are “The Perfect Round” and “The Hole in One” are the beef dishes. Add-ons, by the way, are referred to as “Mulligans.”

We went for lunch and were impressed by upscale food at regular prices. Appetizers included fried green tomatoes, Buzzards Bay Buffalo Wings and giant pretzels among other things.

Sandwiches – like the Bandit Burger – featured pimento cheese and bacon. There was a Sam Adams beer brat and the BLT is served on Texas Toast.

The Bandit Burger was on brioche and had home made chips

The dinners come with a seasonal vegetable, and after 4:00, your choice of garlic herb mashed potatoes, potatoes au gratin or a baked potato.

The Sandhill Ribeye with potato au gratin and vegetables.

Although the Sandhill Grill has only been open since April, already it has been making waves. When we were there there were a few golfers but many more patrons who appeared to be from the community. Subsequent reports from others indicate that their clientele is a lot more than those coming off the back nine.

It is located at 2250 Little Lake Bonnet Road. They do have a Facebook page, but so far no regular web presence.

Taking Skinbuzz on the Road

The bag contains a lot of Skinbuzz products and makes it perfect to take on the road.
The bag contains a lot of Skinbuzz products and makes it perfect to take on the road.

We are always looking for new products to take with us that make our trips easier and more fum. In fact, we have a Hints & Tips section with Gadgets and planning suggestions for just that.

Recently we obtained a new product called Skinbuzz. It all came in a neat little travel bag. Inside is an activated charcoal and bamboo facecloth, a headband and vials of their product. That includes the Clean•Bee Cleanser, Bee•Witched Toner, Bee•You•Tiful Moisturizer and the Coal•Bee Clay Mask.

There was a lot inside that little bag

Passing the Test

My wife is an organics-type and her review of the ingredients found no fault. She indicated that unlike other so-called “organics,” these appear to be the real deal.

In fact, all Skinbuzz products are made with healthy, healing, all-organic, non-GMO ingredients. They are sustainably sourced from the world of bees and are cruelty-free.

Although Skinbuzz initially was made for teenagers, the product has been tested and is good for skin of all ages.  Mrs. Funmister enjoyed the opportunity to try the products herself (and some on me.)

“I particularly liked the fact that not only are the organic and non-GMO, but they also are a bee-based product.  I love the fact that most of the ingredients could be found in our organic garden and landscape”.

Mrs Funmeister

Her assessment was that Skinbuzz leaves a smooth silky feel to the skin and is a good light clean skin care choice even for mature skin.

It was More Than the Solutions

Other things she particularly enjoyed included the fact that the small size products in the zip bag – with washcloth and headband – make it a great travel or gym take along.

A really big plus for someone who wears glasses is the color coding of the bottles. For instance, the cleanser is in blue and the moisturizer in green, ect. It makes it easy to identify them without even squinting.

The bottles have individually colored labels, making them easy to identify

Overall, we were so impressed with the Skinbuzz products that we ordered the sunscreen product to protect us from the Florida sun. Reviews on that to follow.

Meanwhile, you can find more on Skinbuzz here.

Florida Summer Travel – Slow Down & Stay Cool

0
It;s time to hit the road for summer fun!

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles has launched their Safe Summer Travel campaign. As a result, officials are reminding motorists in the Sunshine State to put safety at the top of their travel checklist this summer.

With more residents and visitors on Florida’s roadways, The Department of Highway Safety and the Florida Highway Patrol are partnering with the Florida Department of Children and Families, Florida Department of Transportation, Florida Police Chiefs Association, Florida Sheriffs Association and AAA – The Auto Club Group to help ensure all travelers Arrive Alive.

“Summer is one of the busiest times on Florida roadways and it is also a great time to travel with the whole family. Take time to make sure your vehicle is travel-ready. And always check for children and pets every time you get out of your vehicle.”

Florida Department of Motor Vehicles Executive Director Terry L. Rhodes
It;s time to hit the road for summer travel fun!

The summer months are some of the busiest on Florida’s roadways. Therefore, whether you’re hitting the road for the ultimate family vacation or driving across town, officials suggest to prepare before you leave. Above all, practice good habits behind the wheel. And never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle

A Checklist for a Fun Time on the Roads

  • Slow down, stay cool. Obey all posted speed limits. Remember, speeding and driving aggressively increases the probability and severity of a crash.
  • Check all tires, including the spare. Check the vehicle’s tire pressure and ensure the vehicle’s tires have adequate tread. Under-inflated tires can overheat. Similarly, never overload a vehicle. That can result in premature tire wear, blowouts and hydroplaning.
  • NEVER leave children or pets in vehicles unattended. Summer can be incredibly hot in Florida. Leaving children or pets unattended for even a short time can be deadly. Make certain all passengers are accounted for when exiting the vehicle.
  • Register emergency contact information. In the event of an emergency, make sure law enforcement knows who to call. Florida allows all driver license and ID card holders to register up to two designated emergency contacts. You can register that information here.
  • Prepare for driving in inclement weather. Summer is hurricane season in Florida. Drivers should be aware of changing weather and road conditions. Know evacuation routes, check road closures and call *FHP to report unsafe road conditions.
  • Check for recalls. Always make sure your vehicle is in peak condition to travel. Check for recalls before hitting the road at this website.
  • Drive Sober. Plan ahead and designate a sober driver or call a ride service. Report impaired drivers by dialing *FHP (*347) or 911.

Make Sure You’re Ready

In addition, checking tire pressure and planning your route, always driving sober and obeying the speed limit, are some of the simple steps that can make a big difference and help keep you and others safe. The first line of defense is our behavior.  And remember, buckle up – every trip, every time

In conclusion, statistics show that June and July are the highest months for speeding tickets. Florida officials say obeying speed limits and not driving aggressively improves safety by reducing the probability and severity of crashes.

In Florida, the speed limit will never be higher than 70 mph.
