Our Stay at the Melbourne La Quinta Inn & Suites

When traveling, our eternal question has been – what is the best hotel value where we are traveling? Should we look for a quaint boutique hotel or stick with a chain operation?

In the past, we have had great stays at great little boutique places like The Sea Spray Inn at Vero Beach, the Inn at the Beach in Venice and the Bentley Boutique Hotel in Osprey. But then again, when we stay at a chain, we rather know what to expect – plus we can earn points. And those points may be used later to reduce the cost of our lodging.

So this time, we went to the La Quinta Inn & Suites of Melbourne – Palm Bay. Parked right next to the Days Inn, we had stayed there previously and had been well satisfied.

The Melbourne La Quinta sits on New Haven Avenue just off I-95.

As close as this facility is to both a I-95 and New Haven Avenue we enjoyed a very quiet visit. That, despite the fact we had a corner room facing both of those thoroughfares. Additionally, the location made it easy for us to go north, south east or west both quickly and easily.

Our Lodging

I simply must tell you, for our pricepoint, we could not beat the accommodations. Plus, we had a room at the top. Our fifth floor window gave us what my wife referred to as “a penthouse experience.”

When we arrived we were greeted by a spacious room dominated by a king-sized bed. It was comfortable with side tables that were set up for all of our needs.

The room was large and the bed was as comfortable as it was attractive.

The room also had all the basic necessities. It featured a nice work station, flat screen TV, refrigerator, microwave and plenty of drawer space. There also was an in-room safe for valuables.

The bathroom was just as nice. One of my favorite features was its large walk-in shower.

The room had most of the creature comforts we are used to when we travel.

Although the room was well appointed, due to the current CDC guidelines, there were a number of items we had to request. Among those were a coffee maker, an iron & board, a blowdryer and a Bible. Why? Because these are things that require special cleaning after each guest, so they are doled out only on demand.

So we went downstairs, obtained said items, then trundled back upstairs to set up shop.

The Current Situation

In fact, we noticed that the downstairs lobby, which had been so inviting only a few months back, had been stripped bare. The seating area which had previously been used for the morning’s continental breakfast, was almost unrecognizable.

This once was an inviting dining area.

Became this:

The same area now was all but stripped bare.

In fact, the continental breakfast was no more. Instead of making our own waffles, getting juice and the like, the staff dispensed bags of pre-packaged breakfast items. We then could take our sacks back to our room and consume them there.

Our breakfast options this time around.

Needless to say, we opted for dining out. Sadly this time, our breakfasts at a couple of former favorites did not stack up to the experiences of the past. But that just gave us resolve to try a number of new places we had discovered on TripAdvisor.

Best Hotel Values

But to get back to our quest for the best hotel value in Melbourne – or the best hotel value anywhere for that matter, it depends on your needs. For us this time, we wanted a place on which we could rely. Plus going to a chain gave us the option of both earning points and using collected points to reduce the cost of our stay.

But there are plenty of great values out there – both boutique hotel and chain lodging facilities. We suggest using TripAdvisor to make your decision before you leave. It will help you get a good deal and avoid unnecessary hassles when you arrive.

Pane E Vino – A True Gem of Florida’s Space Coast

When we found Pane E Vino, we didn’t know it would be one of the best restaurants in Melbourne. In fact, it is one of the best restaurants we have encountered. Certainly it is the best Italian cuisine we have come across in our travels.

It all started when we were looking for someplace new to dine. Those who follow us know we like to ask the locals for suggestions. In this case, the young lady at the front desk of the LaQuinta suggested we try Hemingway’s. It sounded like a nice place, so we put the address in our GPS system and headed out.

We arrived at a small strip mall called the Meridian Center, only to find Hemingway’s was closed. However, at the other end of the plaza was this little spot flying American and Italian flags. We parked the car under one of the large sprawling oaks and headed in to take a look.

There we found Pane E Vino and decided to try it.

There’s both outdoor and indoor dining at Pane E Vino.

More Than a Restaurant

We were greeted at the door and ushered in by our waitress Rachel. There’s a subtle elegance in this place. It was minimalist but with attention to detail. As we sat at our dark wood table, we noticed the shelves and racks chocked full of ingredients of all kinds.

There were shelves of goodies. Some of it used in cooking, and some ready to eat.

In addition to the jars and boxes, we noted the large glass-front cooler cases full of all manner of meats, cheeses and baked goods.

Just down from the coolers is their wine selection and a small bar,

The Menu

Checking the menu, we found this little place has a wide variety of selections. There are pizzas, cold subs and the like but we were more interested in the entrees. My wife picked the Penne Al Pomodoro. It featured a couple of styles of pasta sauteed in fresh onion, garlic, basil and peeled plum tomatoes.

The Penne Al Pomodoro – and yes it was as tasty as it looks.

I, on the other hand, was having a hard time deciding between the Manicotti, Stuffed Shells or the Ravioli. Much to my surprise, they offered a combination platter that had all that plus a piece of Lasagna to boot. There was no question – that would be was my choice.

The Combination Platter truly is a slice of heaven.

I must tell you, each of the offerings was melt-in-your mouth delicious. Moreover, it has encouraged me to return and try each one as an entree unto itself.

Our meal was bookended with a pair of treats. We started with some warm, sliced bread. Both the bread and the butter it was paired with made a beautiful start to our dinner.

True to the “Pane” – or bread – part of their name, we started out with a bit of bread.

We ended our meal with one of the largest pieces of tiramisu I have ever seen. It came with two forks and we shared the sweet end to our meal in a most romantic fashion.

The experience well qualifies this place to be one of the best restaurants in Melbourne – and possibly in the state.

And there was a lot more sweetness than our dessert. While Pane E Vino had one case each of Italian cheeses and meats, they featured two cases of baked goods. It would be worth the trip just to get a sampler plate of some of those offerings.

Their selection of baked goods makes for difficult choices.

We’ll Be Back

As I said earlier, I would like to return and have an order of just one of the items on my sampler plate as my entree. That being said, we saw other menu items that were just as alluring. I had big eyes for the Eggplant Parmigiana or the Eggplant Florentine. Additionally, I heard both the Penne Primavera and the Cavatellipane E Vino calling my name.

The Best Part

One of the most satisfying parts of our visits came at the end. You see, our webmaster is Italian, so I sent him a short video and asked him if there was anything he wanted. His lone request was the hard-to-find Ricotta Salata cheese.

They had it and we were able to bring him some back.

When you get down to it, in our estimation Pane E Vino truly is one of the best restaurants in Melbourne. Be certain to put it on your list when visiting the Space Coast.

A Trip to the SpaceX Coast to see History Being Made

So, earlier we talked about the SpaceX manned launch. After it was scrubbed from a mid-week affair to a Saturday, we took the plunge and decided to head to the Space Coast. I think this was one of our most impromptu and funnest trips ever.

We called an old standby, the LaQuinta Inn & Suites of West Melbourne and Palm Bay. Amazingly, we got a sweet deal. So we packed a small bag, grabbed our travel gear and headed out.

While we were there, we made some amazing dining finds, did a bit of exploration and had one of the best days at the beach ever.

The Launch

Watching the Dragon X launch came at the end of our Saturday and actually was not the highlight of our trip. We had spent a lovely day at Paradise Beach. The restorative nature of the sunshine and saltwater was undeniable.

But just before launch there was a clap of thunder. Almost immediately the lifeguards cleared the beach. We and hundreds of others trundled up the stairs and headed for our vehicles. We sat in the car in the rain, listening to the live SpaceX Facebook feed and hoping for things to clear.

They didn’t.

I finally made a decision to head north to see if we could drive out of the weather. The traffic was significant, being that I was not the only one with that idea. Finally, near Satellite beach, the skies cleared. It was just a couple of minutes before launch when I ducked into a parking lot.

Bailing out of the car, I ran to the stairwell as a woman hollered “One minute!” then someone else yelled “There it is!” I strained to see where it was – then pointed my camera where everyone was gazing. There was no white contrail like shuttle launches we had seen in the past.

Then I saw it, the faintest spark high in the sky – that was it. Then it was gone.

It was just a pinprick of light that signaled SpaceX history in the making.

Days at the Beach

As I said, the highlight of our day actually was not the SpaceX launch. It was spending time together at the beach. We carry folding chairs and my wife had thrown a beach umbrella into the car as well. When we hit the beach, we screwed the holder into the sand and pitched the umbrella. My wife braced the chairs against it and used the chair bags as ties to hold it all together.

It was a wonderful time. As the waves pounded in with a stiff breeze, we watched surfers, boogie boarders and one young man on a paddle board that had more than his hands full.

The waves were stout – but lots of fun for the surf riders.

There was plenty of other activities, just down the way from us a couple of girls were digging a hole and taking turns sitting in it, excavating it then jumping in it again. There were couples walking the beach, there was ball playing and plenty of folks just catching some rays.

They found no buried treasure – but did make a ton of memories.

We did have an opportunity to walk the beach. My wife did find a number of shells that had some really great color. Moreover, Sunday morning we got up early, headed out to Indiatlantic and caught a breathtaking sunrise.

It was a wonderful Melbourne sunrise

Our Adventures

As I said earlier, we love the Space Coast. We also have found a lot to enjoy in Melbourne. In addition to great days at the beach, we found a real hidden gem of a restaurant. Sadly, a couple of other places turned out to be not as good.

We also took advantage of Historic Downtown Melbourne to get stocked up on some things we have been missing for a while. But stay tuned – we will be updating you on that and a whole lot more.

Our one vow was, should we head out to see another SpaceX launch, we’d get closer to the action.

When It Comes to Ice Cream – They Got It Made in the Shade

You know, we all scream for ice cream. And recently we had an opportunity to make a sweet stop for some ice cream in Englewood. It was a place I’d wanted to visit for a while. Made in the Shade Ice Cream was one of our first followers on Instagram and always has been faithful in liking and commenting on our posts.

So imagine our delight when we found the place to be the quintessential soda shop. Owners Mike and Rebecca have gone to no small effort to take us back to the better parts of the 50’s and 60’s with an array of antiques and a myriad of different menu selections.

We were greeted at the front door by a bright red vintage Coke machine. It’s the kind where after you drop your dime (yes!) you lift the door and there’s your bottle of ice cold Coke. It also had a built-in bottle opener that saved the cap.

The vintage Coke machine was complimented by a fun gumball machine that makes a spiral twirl through the base before arriving behind the trap door at the bottom.

“I actually used to buy Cokes out of a machine like that,” I confided in my wife.

Other Antiques

Like I say, we were impressed by the amount of nostalgic antiques on display at Made in the Shade Ice Cream. There’s a showcase full of vintage ice cream scoops as well as an antique candy machine. However, we were most impressed by the AMI jukebox that dominates the room.

A thing of beauty is a joy forever.

Mike told us this model was made in 1949 and actually pre-dates the famous multi-colored Wurlitzers. My favorite part is that we could pick any one of the 40 selections and play it at no additional charge. It was hard for us to pick between the wide selection of hits from the 50’s and 60’s.

Better yet, you could stand beside the clear plastic dome and watch as the metal brace swung up, select a record then set it down gently on the turntable. I was swept with nostalgia as the disc began to spin, the arm set down on the plastic and out rolled “Jailhouse Rock.”

What fun it was for us to watch 1950’s state-of-the-art technology.

The Ice Cream

Of course we liked the ambiance of the place. But the ice cream was that much better. We ordered up a couple of our favorites. I had a double scoop sundae while my wife had a root beer float. We both selected the homemade vanilla and were not disappointed.

Let the record show, I offered the cherry on top of my sundae to my wife.

These were some truly sweet treats.

Other Ice Cream Delights

We didn’t have a tough time making our selections, but you might. In addition to Blue Bell and Hershey’s ice cream, we saw edible cookie dough flavors. We looked over some of their uber specialties like The Colossal Cookie Sandwich, a Personal Cookie Pie and even a Bacon Sundae (I kid you not). And there’s a lot more on their menu.

While we stuck with the tried and true – you may want to be more adventurous.

Some of the ice creams, cones and containers available at Made in the Shade.

How to Find Them

When you go to Englewood, Made in the Shade Ice Cream is easy to find at 2411 S.McCall Road. It’s the last ice cream before Englewood Beach (or the first after you leave the beach.) You can also find them on Facebook and on Instagram.

But maybe the best way, is to follow Mike on his way to work. We saw the car and it’s easy to spot.

The Made in the Shade company car – watch for it.

One of the Best

Those who follow us know we have stopped at a lot of ice cream places across Florida, and the way we see it, Made in the Shade Ice Cream is one of the best. But stop by, have some ice cream or candy. Then drop us a line or post up on the Florida Fun Travel Club and tell us what you think!

Bentley Boutique Hotel is Just Right

Boutique Hotel Florida, Osprey hotels, ospry lodging
Boutique hotel near Sarasota, Fun places to stay in Florida, a fun Gulf Coast Stay

Recently we went looking for an economical stay on Florida’s Gulf coast. That’s when we found the Bentley Boutique Hotel. A hotel at such a reasonable pricepoint always is a bit of a gamble. But when we got there – we found Bentley’s to be just right.

Location

For instance, the Bentley Boutique Hotel is in the center of what’s termed The Culture Coast. It’s an easy ride north to Sarasota and just as easy south down to Olde Englewood. That means we had our choice of beaches all the way up from Manasota to Siesta Key (actually, we’re fans of Nokomis Beach).

There are walking beaches, swimming beaches, diving beaches plus opportunities for finding shells and shark’s teeth.

White sand and blue waters are trademarks of the Gulf coast beaches.

When it comes to shopping, we could motor up to Sarasota for a more metropolitan area, or down to Historic Venice for the fun and funky shops they have to offer.

Plus there are great little points of interest like Ideal Classic Cars, which is a great place to observe an astounding, revolving collection of vintage, classic and custom cars, trucks, vans and specialty vehicles.

And when it comes to cuisine, the opportunities are endless. But more on that later.

The Hotel

In addition to not being too far north or too far south, we found the Bentley Boutique Hotel itself is just right. Billed as a “boutique hotel,” it’s not too big and not too small. It has all the amenities we needed for an extended stay. On the hotel grounds there’s the Osprey Beach restaurant, and they also feature a nice sized lounge.

The courtyard has a beautiful swimming pool – which was pretty well populated the weekend we were there. Moreover, it is ringed with chaise lounges and small cabanas, where families can sit and relax. We noted many parents enjoying the shade while keeping an eye on their children frolicking in the pool.

The pool at the Bentley has room for lounging and fun.

We thought one of the nicest touches was the berm of fine, white sand along the edge of the wooden deck. This gave youngsters a beach-like place to play – but it was positioned far enough across the deck to keep the sand out of the pool.

The Details

Bentley’s also has a lot of very nice, personal touches. There’s a small library at the end of the hall with a reading chair. The owners also set up a brace of tables across from the vending machines where we could stop and enjoy a quick snack.

Owners took the vending machine area and made it into a small cafe.

The hallway has a domed ceiling, making it resemble a subway tunnel. So, each of the rooms has a name that reflects a different stop on the London Underground. For instance we saw Paddington, Nottinghill Gate, Putney Bridge, Shepard’s Bush and Piccadilly Circus among others. Our room was Tattenham Corner.

We were in 232.

Our Room

As far as we were concerned, the rooms also were just right. We booked a courtyard view, which had a small balcony. Just like the Vista in Tarpon Springs, this gave us a great place for our morning coffee. It also provided us with a lot of entertainment watching the kids in the water.

We had a great view – although somewhat shielded by the palm tree. Note the beach sand that runs along the deck below.

But even with all the activity, we were surprised at the quiet of our stay. Like I said, there were lots of kids and families – but there was not the accompanying noise. Owners did admonish some to keep their music down as the hours drifted on into the night.

As far as our room was concerned. We can report that our bed was just right. In fact, it was one of the most comfortable we have experienced in our travels. There was plenty of hot water for showers even later on in the morning and the place was spotless and inviting when we arrived (the housekeeping staff looked VERY busy during our stay.

Our room was light and airy. The bed was terrific, and the room opened onto a small balcony.

Along with the aforementioned comfortable bed, we had all the regular comforts. There was a flat screen TV, a refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker. There was an iron and board – even a good sized safe for our valuables.

The bathroom was spacious and had a delightful walk-in shower. All in all, the Bentley Boutique Hotel deserves a return visit.

Local Cuisine

In the past, the hotel had featured a continental breakfast – but due to the current situation they were limited to handing out prepackaged cereals, energy bars, fruit cups and the like.

But we didn’t care, inasmuch as there were at least three great breakfast places within a hop, skip and a jump from our parking spot. We first headed over to the Cafe Evergreen to enjoy their breakfast offering. We also discovered the Eggs-Traordinary Cafe which literally was three minutes away. The Breakfast Cottage – which made our 5-best list is minutes away as well.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it came to our dining opportunities. There are great seafood restaurants in the area, barbecue joints, steakhouses and more. We had the opportunity to eat at some of our old favorites – but we also discovered Nokomo’s Sunset Hut. What I thought would be a dive turned out a great vegetarian flatbread drizzled with an out of sight balsamic vinegar glaze.

Another great culinary opportunity for us was in Englewood, where we stopped at a place I’ve had my eye on for a while. Made in the Shade Ice Cream is the quintessential ice cream parlor where we had a great dessert. We give it five stars and watch out – that will be our next entry here.

A rootbeer float and a sundae – we ate dessert first.

Almost a Secret

To be honest, we struggled with the idea of blogging Bentley’s Boutique Hotel, inasmuch as we wanted to keep it to ourselves. But we dutifully will report that if you are looking for a great place to access all that the Culture Coast has to offer at an economical pricepoint, you can’t do much better than Bentley’s.

   I know we’ll be back.

Thanks to You – Florida Fun Travel tops 200,000 views!

We have just learned that Florida Fun Travel has topped 200,000 views since our inception three short years ago. It was at the end of last year that we hit another milestone – 100,000 unique visits. Both those numbers are for us both huge and humbling.

When we started our travel experience, it was mainly for our own enjoyment. We decided to stop “waiting for when” and get out, experience and explore. It wasn’t long before people were watching our Facebook pages and told us how they loved to follow our exploits.

We love getting out on the road and discovering new places.

So we first started a Florida Fun Travel Facebook page, then this web page that tells of our travels. Since then, we have added Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest to the mix.

Looking at our blog, we realize how many places we’ve visited over the past three years or so. That has involved a lot of lodging facilities, restaurants and points of interest.

When we hit the 200,000 read mark, it caused me to look at our stats. Apparently, Historic Deland – an Absolute Delight has been the single most-read article to date. Other popular articles include our trip to Solomon’s Castle, The Five Must-Dine restaurants of Venice, Ginny & Jane E’s – cute little restaurant and gift shop on Anna Maria Island and a piece we did on Olde Englewood Village.

Solomon’s Castle, featuring Knight and Daye guarding the door.

More to Come

This has been more fun than you can imagine and as we head on toward a quarter million reads (that truly is mind boggling). we have even more places on which to report. This past weekend we found a gem of a hotel in Osprey. It allowed us to exercise our option of staying off site, while having easy access from Sarasota down to Englewood.

But more on that later.

We also found a funky and interesting store specializing in ukuleles, an ice cream shop we have been wanting to visit for quite some time as well as some great dining experiences.

And it’s not over. We already are planning our next foray out (at this point that remains destination unknown). We are in search of more travel experiences, hints, tips and other things to write about.

Join Us

So please, come along with us. Join our Facebook pages, like and follow us on Twitter, Instagram and Pintrest. Most of all, send us your ideas and suggestions. Are there places you have visited that are a lot of fun? Are there places we should go and report back?

Tell us what you enjoy and what you think we might enjoy. Because as we all know – It’s always time to have fun in Florida.

Another Chance we can see the SpaceX Manned Launch

Good news for us but bad news for others – the SpaceX manned launch has been pushed back. It’s now set for Saturday, May 30. This means we might get a chance to sneak over to the Space Coast for this historic event.

To tell you the truth, we can hardly wait. For us, watching a rocket launch always is fun for us. And this time it will be an historic page in the annals of the United States Space program.

We are excited for a couple of reasons. First. this will be the first such manned launch in nearly a decade. Second, even if we don’t make it to the coast, we will be able to see it from the end of our own driveway (weather permitting.)

SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft has been lifted into place. (NASA photo)

We live in central Florida. That puts us a pretty good haul from the Kennedy Space Center – or even the beaches of the Space Coast. Because this originally was a mid-week event, it is not ideal for one of our little getaway jaunts.

That doesn’t mean that we wouldn’t like to go see the SpaceX manned launch. However, the timing – and to get into a huge crush of people at and around the launch site wasn’t made for us.

Viewing Points

That’s why we reached out to the folks at Visit Space Coast. Their site has great information about upcoming launches. We wanted to know if there were places that are a respectful distance from the launch pad where we could get a good view of the space shot should we decide to go.

The Space Coast

And let’s face it, The Space Coast is just a fun place to play. We have had a great time visiting Cocoa Beach and Melbourne. We’ve shopped in Historic Cocoa Village (home of Visit Space Coast). Additionally, we have enjoyed Eau Gallie, Satellite Beach, and Merritt Island among other places.

In addition to the miles of Space Coast beaches, there are great restaurants and points of interest to visit. It can make for a wonderful weekend while watching history being made. And for us, not getting caught up in the madding crowd would be a big plus.

To Launch or Not to Launch

One of our biggest drawbacks to booking a trip to see a launch is the uncertainty. Weather and a number of factors can cause a delay of hours, days or even weeks. That can take the blessed event right out of our vacation margin.

So the idea of going to a Space Coast destination just to have fun – with the lure of a rocket launch in that timeframe – makes more sense.

The Launch

We’ve read that this is to be ” a new era of human spaceflight,” American astronauts once again will be launched on an American rocket from American soil to the International Space Station. As we understand it, this all is part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program.

NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley will fly on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft for an extended stay at the space station. It’s been dubbed the “Demo-2 Mission.”

NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley are set to make history. (SpaceX photo)

Attending

As we said, we certainly would like to be there to see history being made. Plus, we really enjoy the Space Coast and all the area has to offer. From the Atlantic beaches to the great restaurants and wonderful shopping – it has become one of our favorite vacation spots.

Moreover, the hotels and motels we’ve found have made for great stays. In fact, we actually spent a couple of nights in a Cocoa Beach LaQuinta Inn that was built with the help of a half dozen US Astronauts.

We will let you know if we were able to sneak over to see the SpaceX manned launch…closer. If not, we will be watching from our driveway and recording it (weather permitting). And will post it here or on our social media pages. The one nice thing about being in-state tourists is that we will visit the Space Coast to see a launch – and soon.

Memorial Day Travel to be Down – But Not For Us

It appears that due to the Coronavirus some think Memorial Day travel might be down – but not for us. Our plan is to get back into vacation mode

We recently received a press release from the American Automobile Club (AAA). It said for the first time in 20 years, AAA would not issue a Memorial Day travel forecast. Apparently they think the data used to create the forecast has been skewed by the recent outbreak of the virus.

They believe that fewer people will hit the road compared to years past. However, our plan is to head out for somewhere here in the Sunshine State. And we think a lot of others will too.

Memorial Day traditionally is the unofficial start of the summer travel season. And this year it also will herald the return to normalcy as Florida begins to re-open. Beaches, stores and restaurants all are coming back online.

It’s Memorial Day and time to hit the road in search of adventure.

Record Low Predicted

“Last year, 43 million Americans traveled for Memorial Day Weekend. That is the second-highest travel volume on record since AAA began tracking holiday travel volumes in 2000,” said Paula Twidale, senior vice president, AAA Travel. “With social distancing guidelines still in practice, this holiday weekend’s travel volume is likely to set a record low.”

Memorial Day 2009 currently holds the record for the lowest travel volume. The AAA statistics indicate that year only about 31 million travelers. That holiday weekend, which came toward the end of the Great Recession, 26.4 million Americans traveled by car and the rest by other means such as trains and planes.

Travelers’ Confidence Slowly Improving

It’s not all bad news. Officials of the AAA told us that their travel online bookings in the past few weeks have been on the rise. They are predicting vacationers will have a preference for U.S destinations, mostly local and regional locations, and the great American road trip.

Moreover, officials of the AAA told us they expect vacationers will gravitate to road trips. That’s where we live. Our road trips all over Florida just continue to get better.

In fact, we look forward to this Memorial Day as the start of a new chapter in our travel lives here in Florida. Recently we visited Vero Beach. This was still when dining in was not permitted and many of the attractions were closed.

The view from our room at the Sea Spray was one of the most picturesque we’ve had.

Now, things have started to re-open. Many of the facilities have taken their time to deep clean and remodel. It is like a new beginning on so many levels.

So officials of the AAA have predicted record lows. We, however, are looking forward to travel, meeting new people and enjoying new experiences across the Sunshine State.

How to Tell Which Florida Beaches Are Open

As things begin to get back in gear, many people want to know how to tell which Florida beaches are open. To that end, we have found there are several ways to check – especially if you know where you are headed.

Over the course of time, we have witnessed several communities that had opened, then closed their beaches. For us, one way to check the status was to look at beach cams. We found several places you can go and see the beaches of Florida in real time.

Checking beach cams can help see how many folks are there

Beach Cams

Our first discovery was Live Beaches. This is a compendium of web cam sites from all over the United States. The Florida locations range from Panama City to Miami. We found ten Florida cities listed in their queue – each with multiple beach cams.

Additionally, we located Florida Beach Cams. They have their lists parceled out into different geographic areas of the state.

Other Means

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office recently began a “Beach Capacity Dashboard” for the different beaches in their jurisdiction. However, our testing of it found it to be “inactive” at that time.

And on May 10, FLAPOL published this article on which beaches were open at that time. Of course – all that is subject to change.

Finally, we have turned to social media to get real time reports from residents in a given area. Facebook is dotted with groups of locals from St. Augustine and the First Coast all the way around to Pensacola on the Emerald Coast (not to mention the interior portions of the Sunshine State.) A simple search will turn up several from any given area.

At first we just watched, then we joined. Currently, we are members of better than 150 local Facebook groups where we can keep up on local happenings. And of course right now, a hot topic of discussion is are your beaches open, are vacation rentals available, what about parking and the like.

We can report that how to tell which Florida beaches are open is something that can be done. It just takes a bit of work and knowing how to navigate the internet.

What We Love About Florida

We were sitting around planning our next adventure when we started to consider what we love about Florida. And the answer is – quite a lot. At first we tried to prioritize our list. But that turned out to be a fool’s errand. So instead, we thought we’d present them here in no particular order.

Sunrises and Sunsets

Watching a sunset over the Gulf can be the perfect ending to a great day as well as the beginning of a wonderful evening of fun.

We have watched the sunrise and sunset many times and it never gets old. We have stood and watched the sun go down over lakes, rivers and the Gulf. There have been great sunrises we have witnessed over the Atlantic, orange groves and even race tracks. Each one is different, unique and beautiful.

We blogged about Sunrises & Sunsets and the bottom line is – each has its own unique beauty. And for us, nothing beats a sunrise or sunset in the Sunshine State.

The Beach

When we think about what we love about Florida – we have to include the beach. As we learned in the 12 Coasts of Florida, no other state has as diverse a coastline as we do. There are the white sand beaches of the Gulf along the Emerald Coast and the Suncoast. There’s the flora and fauna of the Nature Coast and the Adventure Coast. And of course there’s the Atlantic coast with its great wave action.

It is difficult to beat a day at the beach in Florida – any of them.

Walking the beach, swimming, diving, boating or any number of different activities just give us a wonderful sense of well being. It’s a matter of getting near the water and having our toes in the sand. We think there’s a great restorative quality to sunshine and salt air.

And there are beaches around some of the great Florida lakes and beachside fun along our rivers and streams as well.

The Natural Florida

As delightful as a day at the beach can be, we can tell you that the interior of the state has a natural beauty all of its own. A hike through one of the state parks is a peaceful experience. Most have facilities to cook or camp.

The interior of Florida has a beauty all its own and it is waiting to be explored.

We also have enjoyed a relaxing weekend on the St. Johns River where we sat and watched the birds. Then there was our picnic at Patterson Park where we had lunch and enjoyed all the beauty of nature the Sunshine State has to offer.

Shopping

Although there are some great malls in Florida, we prefer the shops we have found in many of the historic districts. We have shopped beautiful Deland, Englewood, Stuart, Tarpon Springs, Melbourne and Historic Cocoa Village among others. We always find a wide variety of shopping options. There are curio shops, specialty stores, cute clothiers and a wealth of mom and pop operations where we have discovered treasures to take home.

We found Historic Stuart a cute and fun place to shop.

In addition to the stores, we found many of the downtown areas had interesting streetscapes. Of course we also found some great places to stop and have a bite along the way.

Great Dining Experiences

Naturally, finding interesting places to eat is one of our great joys. We do our best to explore an area to find unique restaurants. These are places that not only pay attention to the dishes they are preparing, but also give a great dining experience.

We have listed a few in our five greatest breakfast places so far and eight restaurants on the Ridge you owe it to yourself to try. But there are others as well. The Bake Chop in Deland, Bob’s Train in Sarasota, The Wild Turkey Tavern in Avon Park and of course Cafe Evergreen in Venice.

Cafe Evergreen is not to be missed in Venice.

Fun & Funky Places

What we love about Florida is that there are so many quirky and fun places to visit. To that end, we have found some great little places that are fun and unusual. One of our first trips was to the Monument of the States in Kissimmee. It’s not a big attraction – but there’s not another one like it.

Another great find was Solomon’s Castle in Hardee County. It is a compendium of the wild and wacky – all enclosed in a handmade castle. We also had a great opportunity to visit and enjoy a selection of minor league baseball games that were major league fun.

The Monument of the States is an interesting find.

And There’s More

The best part is – we’re not done yet. There’s so much of the Sunshine State we have not yet experienced. There’s the Panhandle with the Emerald Coast and the Forgotten Coast. We have not yet visited the Florida Keys and all the funky fun that is the Conch Republic.

We plan on taking some of the back roads trips that will carry us through some of Florida’s tiny towns. There are many botanical gardens in the state we have not yet visited – as well as a wide variety of historical sites that are calling our names.

There’s so much to consider when we ponder what we love about Florida – and so much yet to discover.
